Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for permanent Band 3 Senior Healthcare Assistants (HCA) to join Mental Health Central Access Point (MHCAP). The posts are open to applicants that have some experience and knowledge of caring for people with a mental illness.

MHCAP provides 24/7 mental health telephone support to anyone living in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. This includes calls from NHS 111 service. There are plans to expand NHS 111, to include a mental health option, which will come directly to MHCAP.

The right candidates must demonstrate excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with a good telephone manner. The ability to risk assess, problem-solve, and identify when to escalate for clinical intervention is paramount. We use an electronic patient record and ideally candidates should have good IT skills.

The successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to work within a team, with confidence to manage their own workload, demonstrate flexibility in the way they work and be able to take on different roles within the urgent care pathway.

The job is a 24-hr rotational post, and candidates will be expected to work a combination of day, night and evening shifts, over a 7 day period. Whilst there is some flexibility, we are needing to ensure that the service operates fully over a 24-hour period.

Main duties of the job

The role will involve dealing with and supporting highly distressed individuals.

Referrals to the Mental Health Central Access Point (MHCAP) come via health professionals, individuals, families/carers, NHS 111 and other agencies.

You will be expected to complete an initial telephone triage with individuals, and sign post them to appropriate services for follow up, including our own clinical staff, who would complete a more thorough telephone triage. Following the clinical triage these may move through the urgent access pathway and your role will be to make sure that this is a seamless pathway for the individual.

Registered clinicians will be available to always support you.

You will be required to support the registered clinicians with their duties, including supporting with safeguarding, making calls to other services/professionals, checking caseloads, and some admin duties.

You will receive regular supervision, clinical and managerial, and be expected to undertake relevant training. Successful candidates will be required to complete a care certificate.
