Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity to work as part of the Criminal Justice Mental Health Team in Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale.

Main duties of the job

The role and function of the team is to offer advice, assessments, risk assessments, and provide some short term interventions for clients with mental health problems who are on the periphery of offending behavior or committed an offence.

As an integral part of the service you will ensure the development of an effective interface between the team, other mental health services, the police, probation, Court and the prison service and contribute to the development of the teams gateway and assessment role and support the risk management strategy.The forever changing developments within the criminal justice field are well recognised and accepted within the team, and the team work to develop the service to ensure that they stay abreast of and national and local policy changes and the impact and effect this may have on service delivery.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

  • RMN/RNMH/Social Worker equivalent
  • Completion of preparation for mentorship/Practice teacher/fieldwork educator or willingness to complete
  • Current registration with relevant professional body
  • Evidence of on-going CPD
  • Significant post registration experience
  • Experience of completing complex risk assessments and acting in an appropriate and timely manner to manage the presenting risks
  • Evidence of working in a community setting with people with complex mental health issues, and high risk individuals
  • Evidence of good holistic mental health assessment and risk management skills
  • Experience of working with mental health patients in the criminal justice system.
  • Experience of multidisciplinary and multiagency working practices.
  • Active contribution to MAPPA and the risk management around those who present the highest risk to others and public protection arrangements around this.

Desirable

  • Diploma/degree in relevant subject
  • Formal teaching qualification
  • Experience of completing forensic assessments and risk assessments within police, prison and court environments
  • Experience of liaison and diversion schemes.
  • Experience of organising and chairing multi agency meetings
  • Experience of advising the Courts on alternative disposal and sentencing options

Knowledge, skills & ability

  • Knowledge and understanding of health legislation, and Safe Guarding and Child Protection legislation
  • Awareness if NICE guidelines in the treatment and interventions for clients presenting with mental health problems
  • A knowledge and understanding of the principle around the Care Programme Approach, and the responsibilities around the Care Act.
  • Understanding of confidentiality and data protection issues
  • A good understanding of national recommendations and guidance in offender mental health and offender mental health pathways
  • Knowledge of the criminal justice processes and an understanding of offending behaviour linked to mental disorder.
  • A comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the principles and application of the diversion processes within the criminal justice system.
  • A broad range of clinical skills and experience in working in a variety of mental health settings.
  • Ability to work independently and within tight time frames in the highly demanding and pressured field of criminal justice mental health.
  • Ability to accurately screen clients for suitability for services
  • Ability to complete forensic assessments and understand and identify the link between mental health and offending behaviour, and produce an effective risk management plan
