Job summary
An Approved Clinician is a mental health professional approved by the secretary of state or a person or body exercising the approval function of the secretary of state. Some decisions under the Mental Health Act can only be taken by people who are approved clinicians. Responsible Clinicians are the approved clinician with overall responsibility for the case. Health Education England is committed to the development of Approved Clinicians and is supporting these training opportunities.
The training involves:
2 day induction programme
Completion of a training course (between 5-7 days training dependent on the course).
1 day a week for a period of 12 - 24 months for portfolio development, shadowing and mentorship
To be eligible to apply to undertake the training, candidates must either be:
A practitioner psychologist registered with the HCPC
A mental health/LD nurse registered with NMC
An occupational therapist registered with HCPC
A social worker registered with Social Work England
Candidates must also be in a substantive post within CAMHS and must receive approval from both the line manager and Borough Associate Director of Operations for that service area.
The training will be undertaken within the context of the clinician's current role. Upon successful completion, the candidate will be in a position to apply for opportunities within the trust that to utilise the Approved clinician skills.
Main duties of the job
To undertake the role of Approved Clinician for an identified client group
Responsible for the care and treatment of mentally disordered people compulsorily detained under the Mental Health Act.
Responsible for the assessment of all levels of clinical risk within an evidence based framework
Responsible for undertaking mental health assessments incorporating biological, psychological, cultural and social perspectives
Responsible for leading formulation, review and treatment within the context of the multi-disciplinary team
Responsible for compiling and completing statutory documentation and providing written AC reports under the Mental Health Act
Applies knowledge of other relevant legislation, CoP, etc. in particular, relevant parts of the Human Rights Act 1998, the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and the Children Act.
Applies knowledge of relevant guidance issued by NICE to care and treatment delivery
Undertake highly skilled assessment in determining capacity to consent to treatment
Provide highly specialist assessment of clients with severe and enduring conditions based on the appropriate use and interpretation of assessment tools.

Provides expertise and advice to facilitate the effective and appropriate provision of nursing care by all members of the wider team across the designated locality.
