Job summary
This is an exciting opportunity for a Band 3 development post to work towards a Band 4 or a Band 4 Assistant Practitioner to join the CPFT Podiatry Service. The base and locality are flexible to applicant, our core bases: Oak Tree Centre, Huntingdon; Doddington Community Hospital, March; Princess of Wales Hospital, Ely; North Cambs. Hospital, Wisbech; City Care Centre, Peterborough; Chesterton Medical Centre, Cambridge.
The post-holder will work predominantly in their locality but will be required to support the county wide service as needed.
The position is varied in nature working alongside our different Specialist and Advanced Podiatrists in a variety of clinic settings, alongside independent clinics. The candidate will be supported to complete an internal competency programme to develop their skills and knowledge in each area of their role.
This post is open to qualified footcare assistants and current Podiatric Assistant Practitioners or to those new to the field.
Where a candidate is not already qualified for this position, we can offer the post as a Band 3 training position and will support you through the training competencies. On successful completion of the competencies you will then be promoted to Band 4.
Due to the nature of the role being within community healthcare the applicant must have access to a car and be able to drive for work.
Main duties of the job
The post-holder will work in a variety of settings alongside Band 6 and Band 7 Podiatrists, as well as independent clinics, including but not limited to:
- Nail Surgery assisting
- Nail Surgery re-dressing virtual clinics
- Assistant Practitioner clinic (Wound management alongside a Band 7
- Casting clinics
- Triage clinics (New patients)
- Feet Focus clinics (Nail and Footcare)
In addition to the clinical aspects of this role, the post-holder will play an active part in stock management and ordering for the service.

- To provide foot care treatment to a designated patient group as determined by a senior podiatrist.
- To work within a variety of clinical settings including multi and single chair community and hospital clinics in both in and outpatient settings across the county.
- To undertake patient screening, prepare patients for treatment by the podiatrist, assist under the direction of the podiatrist in minor nail surgery and perform and record appropriate diagnostic tests.
- To work alongside the Podiatrists in the management and treatment of active diabetic foot problems including updating records, taking down dressings, redressing, application of casts where directed and administrative support for ordering investigations.
- To work within the Podiatry team, assisting in podiatry care plans and responsible for aspects involved in the running of the service including stock ordering and audit.
- To provide any required appropriate administrative duties including completion of clinical record, clinical monitoring and ordering of stock and supplies.
- Care may be provided in a range of settings including:
- Health Centre Community Clinics
- GP Practice Clinics
- Residential Homes for the Elderly
- Patients Homes
- Secondary care
- To use decision making processes to identify when patients require the intervention of other professional and/or departmental specialist areas by following agreed departmental referral processes e.g. acute wound care/biomechanics.
- To be actively involved in the provision of foot health education advice to patients, relatives and carers and to participate in foot health training where appropriate for Primary Care and Social Care staff.
- To be actively involved in the development of departmental policies, guidelines and protocols.
- To be responsible for the maintenance and security of stock and equipment as appropriate.
- To follow departmental policies procedures and guidelines using discretion to decisions within professional boundaries.
- To be able to treat patients who may be immobile, wheelchair or bed bound as appropriate.
- To be flexible and provide cover for other healthcare assistants at short notice or during periods of absence in other local areas and to undertake any other duties that may be required from time to time.
