Job summary

Clinical Research Fellow in Gynaecology

This post is designed for candidates at ST3 level and above who wish to obtain a postgraduate degree (PhD or equivalent). The post would be initially for one year with the option of extending for another two years subject to satisfactory review at six months.

The successful candidate will work under the supervision of academic leads within the department of UCLH Women's Health Gynaecology Outpatient Diagnostic and Treatment Unit (GODTU) and the Department of Mathematics at UCL on developing Artificial Inteligence models to facilitate ultrasound diagnosis of gynaecological cancer and other pelvic abnormalities such deep endometriosis. These studies are expected to lead to publications in international peer-review journals and form the basis of the candidate's PhD thesis. In addition, the candidate will be expected to help with the organisation and running of multicentre randomised clinical trials, which are part of clinical research activity in the Unit. They will also be expected to take a leading role within the team of clinical fellows within the GODTU.

The GODTU department also offers one-year clinical fellowships for those looking to develop advanced gynaecology ultrasound skills. Potential candidates may separately apply for the clinical fellow role and the clinical research fellow role, as and when advertised, if they wish to be considered for either or both positions.

Main duties of the job

In the initial few months of the placement, the aim will be to ensure that the successful candidate develops skills in gynaecological and early pregnancy ultrasound. Alongside this, they will continue work that has already been started on protocols and ethics applications for projects related to their proposed research thesis.

Once they are in a position to commence recruitment and data collection, they will do so recruiting patients from the clinical caseload as required, with allocated time to fulfil the University requirements for research training and data collection and analysis.

They will also be expected to take a leading role amongst the fellows in the department. This will include helping to manage the fellows' rota, organising research meetings, and teaching and training within the department.

The successful candidate will also demonstrate energy, enthusiasm and a 'can do', flexible attitude and commitment to the work schedule, and demonstrate excellence in working effectively within the multidisciplinary team.
