Job summary

The gastrointestinal services division at University College Hospital is one of the largest in the UK, comprising clinical and academic consultant physicians working within the subspecialty areas of upper GI/laser medicine, HPB medicine, lower GI/IBD, nutrition, and clinical physiology. The department is based in University College Hospital and has a state-of-the-art 8 room endoscopy suite.The Division is seeking to appoint a 10 PA Clinical Leadership Fellow for on a 6 month contract. This innovative and exciting position designed for doctors who have completed Core Medical Training (CMT). This post is designed as a development opportunity prior to taking up a higher specialty physician training scheme. The Fellowship will be for a period of 6 months from February 2026

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work with the NCL Endoscopy Academy, supporting courses and organising training and at UCLH to provide cover for registrar colleagues to attend immersion periods in the endoscopy department at UCLH. This will mean the successful candidate will provide cover and therefore gain experience in a variety of different subspecialty disciplines such as IBD, pancreatobiliary, upper GI, nutrition and functional gut disease. We will also aim to provide training in endoscopy who will in turn undergo immersive training. Any additional time will be spent on departmental projects that emphasise quality improvement and quality assurance under the auspices of the Divisional Lead. It is anticipated that these projects will provide invaluable experience for the postholder in the importance and delivery of Quality Improvement/assurance.Exact timetables will be confirmed upon appointment, and will necessarily be flexible to provide immersion cover.

Knowledge and Qualifications

Essential

  • First Medical Degree
  • Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practise
  • Evidence of recent CPD
  • Evidence of successful completion of Specialist Training (or international equivalent)

Experience

Essential

  • Excellent communication skills with patients, relatives, GPs and the wider multi-professional clinical team.
  • Evidence of team working ability, including work under pressure

Desirable

  • Peer Reviewed Publications
  • Evidence of designing, leading or collaborating and completing at least one cycle of a quality improvement project, with a formative project assessment by a supervisor or equivalent (quality improvement project assessment tool (QIPAT) or equivalent).
  • Evidence of presenting a quality improvement project at local, regional or national meetings
  • Publication as author or co-author of a quality improvement report in a cited publication.
  • Experience of designing, setting up and evaluating teaching courses.
