Job summary
Internal applications are invited for two part-time Specialty Doctor posts (1 day per week/ 0.2 wte) in Orthodontics to start at the earliest opportunity. The vacancies are available on Tuesdays and Fridays only. The posts are based at the Eastman Dental Hospital (RNENT & Eastman Dental Hospitals) part of the Specialist Hospitals Board of University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Successful applicants will join an established team in providing a wide range of orthodontic services and postgraduate training. Applicants will be expected to be active in specialist practice, have experience in postgraduate teaching and training, and excellent communication skills.
All candidates must be on the Specialist Register for Orthodontics.
Main duties of the job
These positions are to support existing clinical service provision and training needs. The focus of these posts will be Orthodontic clinical supervision, clinical training and teaching of trainee orthodontists.
As well as educating trainees with their knowledge and expertise in the field of orthodontics, they will be responsible for treatment being carried out safely, to a level appropriate of a specialist hospital and complying with clinical protocols.
A key component of these posts will be communication with referring practitioners and close working with the consultant team to help drive the service to achieve the objectives of the department.

The post holder will work under the direction of the consultants in the orthodontic department and will be directly responsible to the Clinical Lead. The post holder will be expected to undertake the following:
Clinical
- Provide a courteous and efficient service to all users by actioning all enquiries & queries accurately and promptly thus enabling patients, referrers and clinicians needs to be met/exceeded.
- Deliver the clinical protocols for all patients undergoing orthodontic treatment to ensure that processes and procedures in place conform to local and national standards.
Supervise the clinical work of postgraduate students and STs in accordance with the training requirements of the Department.
Undertake clinical teaching and training of postgraduate students and STs.
Undertake patient treatment on occasion as clinical need arises, eg clinical cover, emergency patients.
- Provide high quality specialist care for patients seen and treated.
- Undertake continued professional development and be aware of any new clinical developments in dentistry, and to regularly update his/her skills and clinical practice.
Quality Assurance & Safety
- Maintain high standards of clinical note keeping, ensuring that all notes are written legibly with the details of procedures
- Conform to the incident reporting guidelines
- Deliver the patient output to ensure that 18 week targets are met
- Contribute to clinical audit/clinical governance and undertake clinical audit projects
- Contribute towards developing, monitoring and reviewing the service including preparing reports as required.
- Undertake any training necessary to fulfil duties of the post including mandatory training such as basic life support, hand washing, fire training and data protection.
- Help investigate any complaints in line with Trust policies
- Liaise with production laboratories and monitor the quality of the appliances provided.
Administrative
- Deal with complaints efficiently and effectively in line with Trust guidelines
- Attend all departmental, divisional and hospital meetings
- Ensure all patient related correspondence is sent to patients in a timely manner
- Produce effective communication with all users of the service including referrers
General
