Staff are encouraged to give and receive feedback, and to listen to and respect each other.We are looking for a highly experienced, enthusiastic Radiotherapy Engineer to join a team of engineers, physicists and dosimetrists in the provision of Radiotherapy Physics services. The ability to work effectively and professionally in technically demanding situations, in a patient environment, with the minimum of supervision is essential.The role is to provide a high level of engineering technical support, which is typically beyond first line maintenance level, to a busy Radiotherapy department. There is also a requirement to undertake all Planned Maintenance activities. The successful applicant will work closely with members of the physics team to perform Quality Assurance checks of the Linear Accelerators. Another significant aspect of the role is to undertake research and development projects. Note, this role does not encompass Proton Beam Therapy.

Main duties of the job

Applicants should be multi-skilled with a primary background in electronic / electrical engineering, with experience in exercising judgement to determine and resolve the causes of faults in high-capital, highly complex patient-critical medical devices and systems, applying suitable fault-finding techniques to diagnose problems, including those beyond the scope of normal first-line maintenance.Experience in servicing and repairing Linear Accelerators, kV and MV Imaging systems and patient support couches is essential.Experience of Varian TrueBeam Linear Accelerators and Varian Halcyon Linear Accelerators would be desirable.Familiarity in performing Quality Assurance checks on Linear Accelerators would also be desirable.A degree or HNC/D in electronics / electrical engineering or equivalent technical qualification in engineering is essential.The integrated Radiotherapy Physics section is part of a multi-disciplinary team in the Department of Clinical Oncology. The Radiotherapy Department is currently equipped with five Varian TrueBeam Linear Accelerators. The department equipment also includes one orthovoltage unit and an Elekta High Dose Rate Flexitron brachytherapy unit. Planning equipment includes a CT simulator with full 4D imaging capabilities.

  • First Degree or HND Equivalent in Physical Science, or equivalent level of knowledge
  • State Registered Clinical Technologist or Eligible
  • Professional Membership of a relevant professional body(e.g. IPEM / IET) or Eligible

Experience

  • Specialist Knowledge of 1)Computer Control Systems
  • Specialist training - Attendance of Manufacturers training courses and practical experience on Linear Accelerators, Cobalt, Orthovoltage and Superficial therapy machines, Simulators, CT simulators and CT scanners
  • A minimum of 5 years practical experience in Radiotherapy servicing workshop practises and techniques, covering preventive maintenance, servicing, inspection, repair, calibration, quality control, safety, acceptance testing and procurement
