Job summary
As the senior (nurse) clinician in the department - the Consultant Nurse in Emergency Care will be responsible for developing and leading emergency care standards and practice. In addition, they will develop educational programmes to support the post and their colleagues.
Working with others in the team, the Consultant Nurse will have the authority and freedom to develop and lead advanced clinical practice and research within the department. They will practice clinically at least 50% of their time according to service need.
Main duties of the job
The Consultant Nurse will specifically:
- Lead advanced clinical practice across the emergency department including development of ACPs, EPs across adult and paediatric emergency care.
- Working with the medical leads to develop the urgent and emergency care (UEC) pathways for both adult and paediatric patients at UCLH.
- Working with the Matron and the Clinical Practice Facilitators taking a lead on educational development of the nursing and AHP workforce in the emergency department

Nurses working at an advanced level will:
- Practice autonomously and be self-directed
- Undertake assessment of individuals using a range of different assessment methods, which may include physical examination, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests or advanced health needs assessment
- Draw on a diverse range of knowledge in their decision-making to determine evidence- based therapeutic interventions; this may include prescribing medication and actively monitoring the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions
- Actively seek and participate in peer review of their own practice
- Appropriately define the boundaries of their practice within UCLH and best practice
- Promote and participate in the implementation of the UCLH Nursing, Midwifery, AHP & Pharmacy Strategy and contribute towards achieving the Trusts Objectives
