Job summary

UCLH Pharmacy provides a comprehensive array of services with the overall aim of ensuring safe, effective and economical use of medicines throughout the Trust, supporting education, training and research. Pharmacy is closely involved in all stages of medicines use, from negotiating contracts for the purchase of medicines through to assessing the outcomes of medicine in the clinical setting.

The pharmacy production units prepare sterile medicines, chemotherapy drugs, nutrition solutions, antibiotic injections, to support specialist medical care. The units are located in the Macmillan Cancer Centre.

There is also an exciting project underway which means that we will be opening an Advanced Pharmacy Therapies Unit in 2025 to prepare cell and gene therapy products.

Main duties of the job

Undertake, after a period of suitable training, the preparation of sterile medicines under supervision. These products are for patients in the UCLH Trust a well as outside organisations

Participate in the daily cleaning programme for the cleanroom areas.

Ensure that all stock levels of raw materials and disposables are checked and maintained and regular orders are placed to the various suppliers. Ensure that orders received into the unit are checked off when they arrive to confirm deliveries are correct

Undertake collection and packing of cleanroom laundry, and ensure that 'clean' laundry is stored appropriately

Assemble raw materials and sterile components according to worksheets, and ensure that all relevant sections of the worksheet are filled in correctly

Inspect, pack and label products prepared in the production unit to ensure that they are ready for final checking.

Participate in the microbiological and other environmental monitoring programmes according to the procedures agreed between production and quality control

Deliver products to hospital wards and departments

Undertake broth validation to ensure ongoing validation of aseptic competence

Participate in the exception reporting scheme, ensuring that all deviations from procedures, dispensing errors, and 'out of limit' values for monitoring tests are notified to a senior member of staff.
