Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and committed HCPC-registered biomedical scientist with a molecular pathology and histopathology background, to join our busy and highly specialised Neuropathology department.

We are a leading academic and diagnostic department, providing a wide range of specialist diagnostic services to the National Hospital (NHNN) and academic and research services to UCL. The Department also receives a substantial number of specialist referrals, including advanced molecular pathology tests. The Department has seen significant recent investments into diagnostic equipment and is accredited to ISO 15189 standards.

The post holder will be working in partnership with a team of molecular pathology and histology biomedical scientists. The post holder will be working predominantly, but not limited to, a specialist Neuropathology laboratory with a section dedicated to molecular pathology, and interact with other members of the neuro-histology laboratory. The post holder will report to the senior molecular pathology BMS, and ultimately to the head BMS and is accountable to the Head of the Division of Neuropathology. The post has been created to maintain and expand our rapid and high-quality diagnostic service. Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for:

  • Performing molecular pathology analysis of diagnostic surgical pathology specimens for the UCLH Trust and for national referrals.
  • Performing various complex tests in the clinical molecular diagnostics laboratory according to laboratory policies and procedures and in accordance with all regulatory agency requirements in order to provide results of the highest level of quality to pathologists, clinicians and their patients.
  • Managing complex data sets as part of the routine molecular diagnostics

Qualifications/ Certification

Essential

  • BSc in Medical Laboratory Science (minimum 2:1) or a related discipline
  • State registration with HCPC

Experience/ Knowledge

Essential

  • To have completed post registration training and gained experience in an accredited diagnostic Clinical Pathology laboratory
  • Evidence of continued professional development (CDP)
  • Health and safety Legislation and knowledge of Quality assurance and requirements of ISO 15189 or 9001 Quality Management Systems.
  • Knowledge of basic management techniques
  • Experience of molecular biology techniques (DNA extraction, PCR, etc)
  • Demonstrable understanding of the importance of audit/quality control
  • Familiarity with the guidelines of the Human Tissue Act and the use of human tissue
  • Understanding of patient confidentiality and the Data Protection Act
  • Experience of external accreditation inspections

Desirable

  • Experience of teaching junior staff
  • Knowledge of the working of NHS Clinical Pathology laboratories
  • Experience of histological techniques (tissue sectioning, paraffin-embedding, staining, etc)
