Job summary
Applications are invited for the position of Senior (post-CCT) Neurosurgical Oncology Fellow at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London, from the period 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2025.
Applicants are expected to have completed all, or most, of their training, and have obtained CCT or equivalent and have full GMC registration. Both UK and overseas candidates are welcome to apply.
The successful applicant is expected to be highly motivated and dedicated in the field of oncological surgery; dedicated in understanding surgical techniques and technological adjuncts required for a maximum safe tumour resection; the biological basis of tumorigenesis; and principles of research required to promote studies and report outcome data.
Main duties of the job
The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery is part of the University College London Hospitals (UCLH) NHS Foundation Trust and is regularly ranked amongst the best neurosurgery hospitals in the world. The successful applicant will be working in the firm of Mr George Samandouras, Consultant Neurosurgeon with special interest in surgical neuro-oncology. The patient population includes adult patients and teenagers and young adults (TYA) >16 years. The Fellow is expected to participate in the on-call rota and may cross-cover other firms when necessary.

1. FELLOWSHIP EXPERIENCE
TechniquesThe Fellow will participate and obtain experience in Advanced surgical techniques including comprehensive awake brain mapping of motor, language and other cognitive functions for primary brain tumours Extra-axial tumour resection including meningiomas and metastases Handling vessels in tumour surgery Microsurgical and endoscopic approaches to intraventricular tumours Posterior fossa/pineal region tumours with assistance of extensive neurophysiological monitoring including free-running and triggered EMGs
TechnologiesThe Fellow will obtain experience in advanced technologies including Intraoperative MRI Fluorescent-guided technologies Understanding and developing workflows of functional imaging overlays for navigation datasets utilising both Medtronic StealthStationTM 8 and BrainLab Buzz Digital O.R. Understanding principles of functional imaging, fMRI paradigms and DTI maps Cranial and intraventricular endoscopy Advanced intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring Use of tubular retractors (BrainPath and ViewsiteTM) Experience with Gamma Knife for treatment of metastases.
Multidisciplinary experience In addition to standard neuro-oncology multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, the fellow will have the opportunity to participate too The weekly, Queen Square, and monthly, ando National, Brain Mapping MDT meetings, where personalised mapping paradigms are derived from our experienced group of surgeons, neuropsychologists, speech and language and functional neuroimaging specialists and where complex surgical techniques are discussed. Additional MDTs include theo Weekly Teenage and Young Adult (TYA) brain tumour MDT and the standard weeklyo Neuro-oncology ando Stereotactic radiosurgery (Gamma Knife) MDT. Provisions have also been made for a comprehensive training of the Fellow including dedicated, weekly half-days of 1) molecular neuropathology 2) diagnostic and multiparametric tumour neuroradiology and 3) medical and clinical oncology, including experience with Proton Beam Therapy (PBT).
Research The Fellow will participate in, or lead, a number of research studies (longitudinal cohort studies, data analysis, techniques description, systematic reviews) for publication to peer-reviewed journals, currently 6-10/year. In addition, there will be an opportunity to participate to monthly brain dissections of cadaveric brains prepared with the Klinger technique, with the use of microscope.
