Job summary
This is an exciting opportunity for a senior staff nurse to join our critical care division. University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH) is one of the largest and most successful foundation trusts in the UK, with an international reputation and a tradition of innovation. Based in the busy West End of London, we have a lively and vibrant atmosphere, with quick and easy transport links to all our sites.
The senior staff nurse in the Critical Care Unit is responsible for delivering excellent patient care and acting as a role model to other staff, patients and the public. You will be passionate about maintaining a high standard of patient care for critically ill patients at the same time as working collaboratively with other members of the MDT (Multi-disciplinary team).
Main duties of the job
You will be working across four critical care units, spread over three sites:
- University College Hospital has 35 beds and is a general unit, taking patients from our busy emergency department, after major surgery, from the wards and from referrals across the UK and abroad.
- Westmoreland Street has nine beds and sees mostly high-risk and complex thoracic and urological surgical patients.
- Our Critical Care Unit at Grafton Way is a new, state-of-the-art cancer facility with 10 beds, which primarily sees haematology patients.
- Our Post-Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU) has 10 beds and is located on the sixth floor at University College Hospital site, taking high-risk surgical patients undergoing head and neck, gynaecological, colorectal and upper gastro-intestinal (GI) surgery.
National audits show that we have some of the best care outcomes in the country, and, within UCLH, the Unit was the first to gain Exemplar Ward status. Several of our nurses have won awards or been finalists in the UCLH Celebrating Excellence awards. Watch this video on the work of the unit.
Our Band 6 Senior Staff Nurse pathway offers:
- a nationally recognised competency and learning framework using 'STEP'.
- rotations across all four sites (CCU and PACU)
- an in-house leadership development course
- access to quality improvement training
- support with completing your MSc/BSc
- the opportunity to work with the North Central London Adult Critical Care Transfer Service.
About us
UCLH is a major teaching hospital and research centre, with state-of-the-art facilities across our sites. In a recent survey of UCLH staff, 74% of respondents said they would recommend ULCH as a place to work, the top score among acute trusts in London. 86% of staff said they would be happy for a friend or relative to be treated here.
We offer unparalleled education and development opportunities for staff. This includes an extensive portfolio of academic and clinical programmes, ranging from ongoing personal development to clinical excellence and leadership skills.
Critical care and PACU nursing opens many doors. We will invest in your future development, which could lead you into exciting roles within critical care such as Senior Nurse, Matron, Education Team Sister or Advanced Critical Care Practitioner. Our nurses have also progressed to roles within the Patient Emergency Response and Resuscitation Team.
The range of staff benefits on offer includes: an interest-free travel season ticket loan; subsidised social club; gym discounts; free staff library; retail discounts; car leasing scheme and on-site accommodation. Our Be Well programme includes a range of initiatives to support staff. As a sustainable employer, UCLH is aiming to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2031.
