Job summary

An exciting opportunely has arisen for a data analyst to join the Infection Prevention & Control Team (IPC) at UCLH. Our IPC team is a large and an active body of multi professional staff consisting of IPC clinical nurse specialists, an epidemiologist, a dedicated surveillance team, microbiologists; virologists and clinical scientists.

Reporting to Hospital Epidemiologist and the Senior Nurses for Infection Prevention and Control the successful candidate will work closely with the IPC team to gather, analyse, and report infection data including blood stream infections, surgical site infection as well as supporting the IPC nurses with collecting, reporting and interpreting data from clinical audits.

The post holder will be responsible for collecting, reporting, and analysing the data that will drive improvements in infection prevention and control across the Trust. In addition, there is a requirement to have excellent interpersonal abilities, good organisational skills and the ability to influence others.

Main duties of the job

The responsibilities of the post holder are:

Surveillance

  • Support the Hospital Epidemiologist in:
  • the extraction, storage and analysis of demographic, infection and clinical patient records stored in our Laboratory System (Winpath), Electronic Healthcare Records System (Epic);
  • the analysis and internal & external reporting of infection-related statistics, including reports on alert organisms (e.g. Covid19, MRSA, MSSA, Gram-negative bacteraemia cases, Carbapenemase Producing Organisms and Clostridioides difficile isolates), screening practices, hand-hygiene performance and so on, ensuring reporting is prompt and within agreed time deadlines i.e. monthly, quarterly, annually.
  • the development of new nursing knowledge in relation to SSISS for IPC training days; What is this referring to?
  • provide analysis and feedback of results to clinicians and other staff, in the form of graphs and charts, escalating appropriately outcome of concerns from patients or any increase in infection with support of the IPC team;
  • assist with the quarterly reporting of infections to our commissioners, the UKHSA, and other internal meetings (e.g. the strategic IPC Committee meeting);
  • the setting of Trust development of targets and benchmarking standards of care when required, to help improve the quality of the patient care;

  • Participate in a number of key internal and external clinical audit projects in collaboration with clinical areas and alongside the IPC team;
  • Participate in raising the profile of clinical audit and quality improvement throughout the organisation;
  • Provide training as required on data entry to clinical and non-clinical staff on the databases and in the use of relevant software;
  • Contribute ideas / strategies in care to reduce HCAI incidence. This may include creating audit tools, following up on action plans and updating project databases;
  • Promptly report on any technical issues affecting audit and surveillance systems, liaising with systems support staff, the Hospital Epidemiologist and the IPC team to resolve problems.
  • To use data effectively and reduce duplication in data processes.

Reporting and Analysis

  • Providing analytical support to the IPC team.
  • To assist members of the IPC team in providing analytical support to all levels and functions within the Trust.
  • To help produce prototypes of new reports to support the IPC team.
  • To use key sources of benchmarking information as part of the analytics work that you do.
  • Planning tasks and activities that may require adjustment e.g. dealing with statistical or reporting responses to urgent questions, Freedom Of Information (FOI) requests, or enquiries for meetings and KPI reports.

Data Quality

  • To work with the IPC team on procedures to identify areas for improving data quality.
  • To support data quality audits where required.
  • To support operational staff with information and advice to resolve data quality issues.

Communication

  • Supporting IPC team analytics specifications that meet their business requirements including advising and persuading on techniques to be used.
  • To present the results of any complex modelling work to non-information staff in clear and unambiguous ways.
  • To liaise with key staff (e.g. DIPC, Microbiology, Virology, Pharmacy) to ensure that reporting appropriately supports business objectives and performance.

Responsibility for research and development

  • To support requests for research data
  • To develop new methodologies for the analysis and interpretation of data

Supporting the performance of our SSISS, in collaboration with other members of the IPC team, including:

  • the process of updating and maintaining accurate records of all patients surveyed, ensuring confidentiality is maintained;
  • the in-depth Review of followed-up surgeries for the possibility of a Surgical Site Infection (SSI);
  • the upload of the information obtained for the SSISS to the UKHSA website accurately, submitting data in line with deadlines;
  • undertake a training session from Public Health England in regard SSISS;
  • other related surveillance as requested by the IPC team;
  • identifying patients at risk of SSI, this includes post discharge surveillance and liaising with IPC team to highlight any relevant patients who have had a surgical procedure and who meet our objective
