Job summary
The appointed candidate will work across two services- the AIP service and the maternal medicine service.
UCLH is a regional AIP centre. Abnormally invasive placentation (AIP) or placenta accreta spectrum, is a generalised term when a placenta implants with some degree of invasion into the uterine wall. The incidence of placenta praevia and AIP along with its complications is increasing due to the increasing incidence of Caesarean section and increasing maternal age. Women are at increased risk of antepartum haemorrhage, preterm delivery, blood transfusion and hysterectomy. Studies have shown that maternal morbidity and mortality are reduced (less bleeding and less likely to require further surgery) when women with AIP deliver in a centre with a multidisciplinary care team who have experience in managing the risks and challenges in these cases.
Main duties of the job
UCLH is the lead provider in the North Central London (NCL) Maternal Medicine Network (MMN). The MMN is responsible for ensuring that all women in the network's footprint with significant medical problems receive timely specialist care and advice before, during, and after pregnancy. UCLH provides regional clinical leadership - on the identification, referral, and management of women with medical conditions, including co-developing guidelines and referral pathways. The Maternal Medicine team is a multi-disciplinary team consisting of maternal medicine midwives, obstetricians, obstetric physicians, and specialist clinicians. The specialist maternal medicine midwife conducts a high risk clinic, providing continuity for the most medically complex pregnancy patients.
The complex pregnancy midwife will support the development and implementation of the AIP service and maternal medicine service at UCLH. There will be a key focus on addressing inequalities in all aspects of care. They will provide and co-ordinate expert and high-quality professional advice from a midwifery perspective, to support and facilitate the delivery of high-quality care within the AIP and maternal medicine services in line with the agreed shared priorities for each service.
