Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Surgical Specialities Division at UCLH for enthusiastic and motivated Data Manager to join a well-established and supportive management team.

This is a permanent Band 5 role in the Division of Surgical Specialities which comprises of Trauma and Orthopaedics, Head and Neck, Urology and Thoracic Surgery. The Division has a large inpatient base for elective surgery, but also includes a significant day-case, non-elective and outpatient workload. The post holder will work as part of the Surgical Specialties Division (SSD) in shaping the use of IT outcome data and recording systems within the Division in line with associated local and national data input requirements.

A large aspect of the role will support the preparation of surgical and medical outcome data on Divisional clinical activity in line with all local and national requirements and deadlines. The post holder will use their analytical and reporting skills with their knowledge of processes to input and validate datasets in advance of submission to internal stakeholders and external bodies.

Main duties of the job

The key results area of the role will be to:

  • Successful completion of all data preparation and input for local and national registries across the SSD services, to a high standard.
  • Act as subject matter expert on SSD's various databases and information systems; supporting users in meetings, ensuring training packages are updated in line with working practises and leading the resolving of any system issues to successful conclusion.
  • Support the Senior Data Manager in the development of policies including updating contingency, data administration protocols and operational policy to ensure an effective use of the various systems.
  • Assist with the implementation of the roll out of new data/IT systems used within the Division.
  • Maintain an understanding of the local and national performance information, indicators and targets that Surgical Specialties' is expected to submit and achieve and how the systems can be best used to facilitate this.

With approximately 8,000 inpatient episodes, 7,000 day case procedures and 84,000 outpatient episodes per year it is a busy Division with a wide variety of strategic and operational priorities. The Division of Surgical Specialties has an annual turnover of over £90m and a workforce in excess of 800 staff.

The post holder will report to Senior Data Manager, as well as regularly providing updates to the General Managers and Clinical Leads in the relevant services.

  • To work with SSD teams to provide regular service reports and expert knowledge on the capturing of outcome data.
  • Develop systems for improving the collection of accurate and timely source data.
  • To develop a good working knowledge of all systems used within SSD and help assess and manage the impact new datasets have on existing trust systems both operational (eg changes to working practise) and from an information communication technology perspective.
  • To create ad-hoc management information reports in a way that can be understood by a wide audience that support management decision-making, planning and evaluation.
  • To assist all staff in their understanding of the availability, use and interpretation of the data systems for each speciality.
  • Provide each specialty with information about any changes to the national datasets and measures for peer review or other respective monitoring measures and provide and advice and guidance in terms of the compliances required.
