Job summary

Would you like to play a key role in developing the clinical input to the new, nationally commissioned, Proton Beam Therapy (PBT) service at University College London Hospital (UCLH)?

We are seeking an experienced band 6 or band 7 physiotherapist, with the energy

and focus to shape a new service. The post holder will provide assessment, advice, and treatment to children and teenagers, across various settings, during the course of their PBT treatment. This role is a 9-month fixed term contract and has arisen due to the post holder going on maternity leave.

The successful candidate will be welcomed into the Paediatric & Teenage Cancer therapy service. You will develop expertise in paediatric and teenage cancer care alongside nurturing your highly specialist physiotherapy skills. Prior experience of PBT services is not expected for this role.

The post holder will join an innovative and award winning Paediatric and Teenage therapy team. Cancer care is one of the top three strategic priorities for UCLH. The Trust has the largest paediatric and young adult centre for radiotherapy in the UK with a close partnership with Great Ormond Street Hospital. The PBT service has expand this further, delivering cutting edge treatment for head and neck, brain, and sarcoma diagnoses. Together, UCLH and The Christie will see more children and teenagers with cancer for PBT than any other centre in the world. Our Teenage Cancer Trust Unit is the UK's first and largest unit.

Main duties of the job

To lead on inpatient, outpatient, and ambulatory care for paediatric and teenage patients attending UCLH, from all over the country, for PBT treatment.

To liaise regularly with external agencies, other hospital trusts, and community teams to ensure smooth transition between services.

To provide effective and evidence-based assessments and treatments in order to manage a caseload of patients who present with a wide range of needs associated with their cancer diagnosis and treatment.

To develop and maintain effective working relationships with patients, parents/carers, and other stakeholders, using highly developed communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.

To work collaboratively with other professionals at UCLH in order to provide holistic, patient centred care.

To promote a culture of continuous improvement and innovative practice. To initiate and participate in evidence-based projects and be responsible for implementing changes to the service and monitoring standards of practice.

To capture data in order to demonstrate outcomes and expand the service as required.

To take responsibility for your own learning and development. To disseminate knowledge to other team members at UCLH as well as providing support and education to professionals at other NHS trusts and external agencies.

To provide cross cover and clinical supervision to the general paediatric, as well as paediatric, teenage, and adolescent cancer services, as required.

Essential

  • Degree or Diploma in Physiotherapy
  • State Registered Physiotherapist (HCPC)
  • Evidence of relevant post qualification study at postgraduate level or equivalent knowledge
  • Good written and spoken English
  • MSc or Diploma relating to aspects of Physiotherapy Practice

Experience

  • Significant experience at Band 6 or 7 level and previous NHS experience as a physiotherapist.
