Job summary

Applications are invited for an Education and Wellbeing Fellow in Emergency Medicine starting in August 2023 for a fixed term for 12-months with a split of 50% clinical and 50% education and wellbeing post.

We are seeking a registrar level doctor to lead, innovate and champion a new wave of sustainable wellbeing initiatives tied to Education. The post will be broad, and the successful applicant will be supported by the ED postgraduate education lead, divisional leads and the Director of Medical Education.

The post would be best suited to a senior registrar. Key skills will be a wide knowledge of curricula and assessment tools used by doctors and allied health professionals in training, the ability to organise and lead on initiatives, strong IT skills, excellent communication and negotiation skills.

Main duties of the job

The post holder should be of registrar or equivalent grade in Emergency Medicine and fully registered with the GMC. We welcome trainees holding national training numbers as out-of-programme training experience (OOPE), post-CCT fellowships or a standalone experience.

You will work alongside our existing registrars on our tier-A rota and so must be able to work in all areas of the Emergency Department including paediatrics and the resuscitation room.

The education and wellbeing component will incorporated in a bespoke job plan agreed in advance with the successful post holder and complement our education and research strategy working including our Digital Education Fellow and wider education team.

This is fulltime role in the Emergency Department and the final job plan will be bespoke to the successful applicant.

The approximate split in the job plan will be 50% clinical and 50% education and wellbeing, with a weekend frequency of 1 in 6. There will be a proportion of out of hours working and night working in line with normal working in the ED. We support fully annualised rostering for our registrars to enhance job satisfaction and work-life balance.

Salaries will be commensurate to the post-holders previous experience and subject to banding with London weighting. Overseas candidates will need to be registered with the GMC prior to commencing the post in August 2023 and supported through a certificate of sponsorship (CoS) process.

It is essential that you have experience leading a clinical shift as a senior registrar as you will be participating on our tier A rota as well as full paediatric, trauma and anaesthetic competencies.

Main duties of the Education & Wellbeing Role

We would like the successful applicant to lead on the following transformative campaigns to better empower our doctors and allied healthcare professionals working in an inclusive ED:

1. to foster a culture of listening to empower our trainees.

2. to lead on sustainable system changes such as the Speak-up campaign, improving self-care, resilience and strategies for reducing work-environment stress.

3. to explore the feasibility of annualised rostering for our junior trainees.

4. to work with our existing education fellows and consultant team to improve the satisfaction from Work Based Assessments (WBAs) and other training requirements.

5. to examine the clinical and non-clinical work environment to implement ergonomic change to improve wellness.

6. to present sustainable changes achieved at regional and international conferences as a successful model for change.

Main duties of the Clinical Role

You will work at a senior registrar in the ED role participating in the tier-A rota with approximately 1 in 6 weekends.

You must be able to work independently in all areas of the ED including the resuscitation room, majors, urgent treatment centre and paediatrics as well as lead the night team as the registrar-in-charge.

You will be responsible for reviewing patients seen by our junior medical team and complementing consultant delivered care.

Deliver point-of-care teaching and support for our multi-stream trainees as well as career grade doctors and ACPs.

You will be supported to develop your senior registrar leadership abilities with supported ESLEs and work-based assessments by our experienced consultant trainers.

You will be encouraged to develop and fully sign-off your point-of-care ultrasound skills in line with the requirements set-out by the Royal College of Emergency Medicine.

To engage with our research team in the ED appropriately recruiting and supporting patients recruited to our studies.

To attend our weekly clinical governance meetings and participate and enhance your managerial and safety skills.
