London Ambulance Service NHS Trust

This job is now closed

Job summary

The overall aim of the Advanced Paramedic Practitioner - Urgent Care (APP-UC) is to assess, treat and safely discharge patients, or utilise appropriate care pathways to reduce unnecessary hospital admissions.

Their main objective is to take a detailed history from patients and provide a targeted advanced assessment. To do this they may utilise additional skills such as a detailed neurological assessment, otoscopy and ophthalmology, pregnancy tests and urinalysis and point of care blood testing. As well as this the APP-UC has an extended medicines formulary and other interventions such as wound closure.

The role combines the APP-UC working autonomously as solo responders to 999 and 111 calls, with rotational placements across different clinical settings outside of the ambulance service. Rotating through general practice, Urgent Care Centres, minor injury units and other community settings supports the development of this alternative model of urgent care, and maintains the ongoing competence of the APP-UC skills in these areas.

Main duties of the job

Responding to a range of 999 and 111 calls the APP-UC will utilise advanced clinical skills to assess, treat and/or refer or discharge patients utilising advanced assessment techniques, accomplished clinical decision making and diagnosis. Aiming to keep the patient at home or within the community the APP-UC work closely with other healthcare providers in the capital, rotating across different clinical settings such as General Practice, Urgent Care Centres and Minor Injury Units.

About us

The London Ambulance Service is building a world-class ambulance service for a world-class city, integrating access to urgent and emergency care on scene, on phone and online. We are now looking to expand our successful Advanced Paramedic Practitioner Urgent Care (APP-UC) programme further, with additional posts established to support further expansion across London.

This is an exciting opportunity for clinicians who wish to develop as advanced paramedics and aspire to provide advanced care to patients presenting with undifferentiated urgent care needs.
