Exciting opportunity for Permanent Inpatient Matron

In order to support continuity Nursing leadership in the Barnet inpatient services we are recruiting for a permanent Matron's role. The role is full time Monday to Friday 9-5.

The post holder will be accountable for the allocation, deployment, prioritisation and delivery of the nursing strategy and for implementing and reviewing systems, policies, standards and procedures that ensure the provision of high quality services with frameworks agreed by the Trust. The post holder has overall responsibility for the management and development of integrated inpatient nursing mental health services in Barnet.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will have clinical leadership responsibilities and will provide frontline leadership to staff on nursing issues and patient-centered care.

The post holder will ensure the development of governance structures and processes to improve quality of care, safety and patient experience.

The post holder will develop a culture of clinical improvement, leading by example and empowering nurses to improve the quality of care and well-being of service users.

To be known and visible to staff, visiting the ward regularly, being familiar with the service users and their needs and the challenges faced by your staff.

The post holder will have oversight and focus on each stage of the care and discharge pathway, offering expertise in the management of complex cases.

The Matron will be responsible for taking action when quality standards or performance require improvement.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Modern Matrons are the quality and clinical safety leaders for their designated areas and are therefore responsible for ensuring that staff practice and conduct meet requirements of the Trust. They retain responsibility for the quality of clinical standards, safety, skills and competencies development including mandatory training and developing knowledge within the team of Trust management structures, operations, policies and protocols.

  • You should provide expert nursing advice on the delivery of patient care, ensuring that you are visible and accessible to staff and consultants, attend the ward regularly, know the service users personally and their clinical needs and be aware of the challenges faced by your staff. This means putting recovery and choice at each stage of the care pathway. You should attain the standards of care required in the Trust and evidenced in audits and national surveys, including the CQC standards and National Patient Survey. You will need to meet regularly with the ward managers and consultants to review clinical quality and agree action on complex cases.

  • You will be accountable for clinical supervision and ensuring that this takes place regularly for all staff, either by supervising senior staff or by reviewing supervision of other staff with your seniors. This should happen in line with Trust requirements and should include case management supervision, open safe reflective practice discussion and should link effectively to objective setting/PDP processes, the fulfilment of statutory and mandatory training requirements and any performance improvement actions that may arise.

  • You must be familiar with Trust clinical and related policies including the Observation Policy, the Mental Health Act 1983, the Childrens Act 2004, the CPA policy and Safeguarding arrangements and ensure they are implemented in practice. As a clinical leader you will be called on to provide expert advice and support on the management of complex cases and the prevention and management of risk.

  • You are accountable for ensuring that clinical incident reports in your area are produced, signed off and are timely, coherent and accurate in accordance with Trust policy and that lessons learned are disseminated swiftly to help prevent recurrence. Similarly, you are accountable for investigating complaints and identifying and applying learning. Sometimes your investigative role will be in areas other than your own clinical area and, likewise, other Modern Matrons may investigate in your area.

  • You should ensure active debriefs are held with staff and services users appropriately following events that have been significant, distressed or caused injury to people. This should be added to the SUI/investigation.

  • Being curious is a good thing as it helps identify issues of concern which might otherwise remain hidden and become significant, undermining the therapeutic culture.

  • You will need to build an effective clinical network both professionally and with other professionals and leaders this is a key element in effective leadership and the promotion of robust recovery models for service users.

  • You must ensure systems are in place which promote choice for service users in all aspects of their care, improve the quality of their experience, and that any complaint is addressed quickly and efficiently. You will need to make sure that quality of communication with service users and their carers/relatives is clear, understanding and open in line with Trust procedures and Patient Experience Team guidance.
