Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for highly motivated individuals to work as part of a multidisciplinary team in developing our Complex Rehabilitation service which will be situated in Somerset Villa on the Chase Farm site in Enfield. Somerset Villa is a 13 bedded unit offering rehabilitation assessment & treatment. The service is an integral part of the local adult mental health care pathway and works in partnership with key stakeholders. The service will offer a specialist multidisciplinary team who will provide intensive input, working with service users in developing individualised care programmes in preparation for successful step down to a range of accommodation & supported housing in the community. The principles of co-production and delivery of 'Values Based Practice' are key to the delivery of this service.

We are looking for Deputy Ward Manager, who enjoy working in a dynamic and challenging environment and a team player. You would remain focused on enabling and empowering staff to deliver high quality patient care & focussed outcomes. You must be able to work flexibly and efficiently within the MDT and have excellent communication skills.

You must possess the clinical skills and competence necessary for caring for this group of service users.

Main duties of the job

Somerset Villa is a 13 Bedded Unit offering rehabilitation assessment and treatment to those with a range of continuing mental health problems. Many service user require treatment users the Civil Section of the MHA 1983. The service operates a Multi-disciplinary approach to care that includes nurses, doctors, occupational health, psychologist and drama therapist who work together in devising individualised care packages to the effect of on-going psychological symptoms, promote mental health and facilitate the development of sufficient coping skills, knowledge, confidence and motivation

The post holder will work closely with and deputise for the Rehabilitation Manager in there absence. Be an active member of the team of the Multi-disciplinary team, supervise, teach and instruct trainees, students and junior staff in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating patient care.

Working independently, the post holder will be responsible for developing and coordinating the individual assessment and subsequent care plan as agreed within the Multi-disciplinary team.

The post holder will adhere to the trust policies, data protection and health and saftey.

MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

CLINICAL

  • To participate as an effective member of the MDT and be responsible for the development and implementation of a patient centred approach to care: assessing, developing, implementing and evaluating the care needs of patients and their carers.
  • To ensure that statutory and legal requirements of care are incorporated safely within each patient's programme of care.
  • To observe the requirements of the Mental Health Act 1983 (as amended 2007) ensuring the patient is fully informed of their legal position and their rights under the Act.
  • To interpret the significance of clinical observations, act upon them; and communicate information to other multi-disciplinary team members after making the necessary clinical judgements and in line with clinical protocols.
  • To determine nursing priorities and plan patient care accordingly including full risk assessment, inform the Ward manager when changes in circumstances may affect standards of care.
  • To meet the physical, psychological, social and cultural needs of the individual and their family, using research based knowledge and skills to maintain the individual's identity.
  • To recognise the needs of the family/carers, ensuring their involvement in care where appropriate whilst offering support and education with empathy.
  • To ensure that due regard is given to the customs, values and spiritual beliefs of patients.
  • To ensure that measurable high standards of nursing care are maintained and participate in the setting and review of standards and nursing audits and in supporting staff in delivering and achieving high standards of nursing care.
  • To liaise with other professionals/specialist nurses and special units to ensure that all facets of the patient's care are covered.
  • Apply clinical knowledge and experience to provide education for patients to develop a greater understanding of their mental health condition and working in a patient centred way with clients to help develop their awareness of their condition, life skills and coping strategies.
  • To administer medication in accordance with the NMC Code of Conduct, and locally agreed policies. Have a thorough knowledge of medication used in the treatment of mental health and to provide information regarding medication, treatment, dosage and side effects to patients, relatives and carers. Use all available resources to assist in this.
  • To act as an Advocate for patients, representing their views in ward rounds, handover, tribunals etc.
  • To supervise junior staff and students on placement and ensure placement and learning objectives are met.
  • To carry out duties of the named nurse in co-ordinating care of specified service users.

PROFESSIONAL

  • To be aware of and practise professional accountability with due regard to the NMC Code.
  • To adhere to all Trust policies, procedural guidelines and current legislation.
  • To ensure that the nursing activities within the Ward/Unit reach the required professional standard and encourage staff to do likewise.
  • To ensure that documentation of risk assessment treatment of individuals is maintained to NMC standards.
  • To maintain that the rights and standards set out in the Patient's Charter document are met by implementing and monitoring standards taking appropriate action to review any aspects of the service that do not meet safe/satisfactory levels of care and put in place mechanisms for improvement.
  • To maintain an up to date knowledge of the speciality, nursing developments and an awareness of future implications for the Directorate eg PREP, Clinical Supervision, Partnership in Care, etc.
  • To maintain own registration with the NMC.
  • To discuss present performance and future needs with the Ward Manager using individual performance review in accordance with the Trust Policy and maintaining own personal records of professional development.

MANAGERIAL

  • To support and assist the ward manager in the development of the service

  • To support and assist the ward manager in the daily running of the ward, ensuring efficient and effective use of resources and to have specific on-going responsibility for delegated aspects of the running of the ward.
  • To be aware of the individual needs of other team members, giving support and guidance.
  • To participate in orientation and induction of new staff.
  • To give and receive appraisal, supervision of self, junior and untrained staff in line with Trust policy and the principles of the Knowledge and Skills Framework and support team members to develop their full potential.
  • To give and receive clinical supervision on a regular basis in line with Trust policy.
  • To actively participate in the completion of Quality Audit documentation and undertake audits relevant to the Ward/Unit as required.

  • To promote the importance of Health Education to staff, including students, patients and their carers. To run awareness sessions and ensure one to one support is provided as necessary for staff, service users and carers drawing on resources and input from Public Health colleagues and other agencies as necessary.
  • To undertake and develop the appropriate skills of practice to widen professional scope, ensuring a period of training and in line with approved policies and procedures.
  • To attend staff development sessions/days and Team Away Days as agreed by the Ward and other Managers in line with personal and service development plans.
