Job summary
The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has been at the forefront of the provision of innovative and pioneering specialist orthopaedic surgery/care for over 100 years. Nationally and internationally we are recognised for the expertise of our clinical staff who aim to provide high standards of care throughout every step of the patient's journey. This post is designed to give the successful applicant the opportunity to develop their research pedigree in an environment of clinical academia, whilst maintaining clinical skills and being exposed to the breadth of orthopaedics and musculoskeletal pathology.
It is envisioned that the successful candidate will complete this post with published papers and a CV that will make them more competitive in the next stage of their career. They will also have knowledge and expertise that will serve to develop their own research in the future. The successful applicant will work within the team of one of our research active clinicians on all aspects of research including grant writing, research design, approvals, carrying out the research and writing up and disseminating the results.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidates must hold GMC registration. MRCS or equivalent is also desirable. The post is suitable for individuals wishing to expand their Orthopaedic experience. The post holder must be able to demonstrate flexibility and have the ability to work as part of an effective team, whilst maintaining high quality patient care.

Experimental design
The carrying out of the research which may include basic science laboratory work, data analysis and clinical research work.
The writing up of research findings and submission to journals for publication or presentation at national or international conferences.
Undertaking research training as required by the work involved in.
Clinical
The admission and treatment of emergency admissions received from other hospitals.
Clerking (i.e., full history and examination) and day to day management of the inpatients for whom you are responsible.
Arrangement, follow up and follow through investigations such as blood tests, X-rays and ECGs.
Investigation and management of tertiary referral patients.
Practical procedures e.g., Insertion of venflons, catheters, nasogastric tubes etc.
Documentation of patients progress in the hospital notes.
Obtaining consent for procedures (when appropriate).
Carrying cardiac arrest bleep and acting as member of resuscitation team.
Preparing patients for surgery, preparing theatre lists and on occasion assisting with procedures in theatre.
Safe and cost-effective prescribing.
Close liaison with other members of the team and your Consultant, Registrars, GP trainees, Fellows and Nurses concerning care of your patients.
Communication with patients, relatives, nurses, GPs and other colleagues.
Handover of patient information between shifts.
