Job summary
The Outpatients Department at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital is housed in a modern purpose-built building which covers two floors at the front of the hospital; and is very much the front door to the care and services provided by the Trust.
The department consists of consultation and treatment rooms, an injection suite and off-site clinics based in primary care settings. There is opportunity for variety in your working day including running diverse clinics and involvement with specialist teams. The current operational hours of the Outpatient Department are Monday to Saturday, 08:00-20:00 with a planned schedule to provide seven days working
In addition, we run specialist nurse led dressing clinics where you will work alongside the doctors and multidisciplinary team providing wound care and the knowledge to promote wound healing. This will be underpinned by attending a fully funded wound care course/module at Birmingham City University.
In our injection suite you will gain experience in supporting patients undergoing minor procedures, ensuring smooth admission, treatment and safe discharge. You will also assist with our walk-in spinal service where you will support patients who may require emergency surgery.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will:
- Work at all times in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Standards of Practice and Behaviours, revalidation and relevant professional guidelines, independently / autonomously and at times without direct supervision.
- Be accountable for their own professional actions and those delegated to others.
- Ensure accurate assessment of patient care needs, development of care plans, implementing and evaluating care based on the patient needs.
- Achieve and maintain competence in identified mandatory and statutory training; develop and maintain clinical competencies, skills and knowledge which relate to the area of clinical practice (i.e. venepuncture, cannulation, ECG, urethral catheterisation and any other relevant duties).
- Respond to patients, relatives and carers concerns as they arise and take remedial action as required.
- Take charge of the practice setting as required.
- Assume responsibility for undertaking tasks delegated by the nominated line / shift coordinator. This may include representing the ward at meetings, link nurse responsibilities, audit, clinical governance initiatives and supervision and role competency assessments for unregistered staff and students.
