Senior Clinical Fellow Spinal Surgery

Job summary

The post is anticipated to be filled by a trainee committed to a career in spinal surgery who wishes to extend their experience prior to appointment as a consultant. They should have at extensive experience in spinal surgery and be at SpR 6 (ST9) level or above and obtained FRCS(Orth) or FRCS(SN). The appointee will work largely at the middle grade level, although there may be opportunity for independent operating and outpatient work, dependent on experience and progress. Whilst it is anticipated that the fellow should gain a broad exposure to spinal surgery, account will be taken of any particular field of spinal surgery the appointee wishes to specifically develop.

The weekly timetable will depend on the Consultants the appointee is attached to but they are expected to attend the Out-patient clinics, in-patient operating lists, ward rounds, audit, MDT meetings and clinical teaching as identified according to the job plan. The fellow will also be expected to undertake a weekly daycase injection list. Currently two consultants undertake 3-session operating lists on a single day. The successful candidate will be expected to assist as required whilst maintaining compliance with any hours requirements.

The appointment is subject to the Terms and Conditions of Service and is a whole time appointment. It does not attract a National training Number currently so the appointee will need to bring their number with them or have completed training.

Main duties of the job

Whilst recognizing that the spinal fellow may wish to gain greater experience in specific subspecialist interests within spinal surgery, the successful candidate is expected to ensure they take the opportunity to ensure adequate breadth to their training.

They will be expected to actively participate in the department's audit and clinical governance activities with appraisal.

This post is established to allow the Trust to meet productivity requirements. The timetable will vary according to the needs of the department and the successful applicant's experience and duties, but will normally contain a mix of the various categories of work suitable for extending training and experience.

The post holder will be responsible to the relevant consultant for an individual patient's care and should carry out the consultant's instructions and policies, always seeking advice when appropriate. All departmental protocols and policies must be followed and the post-holder must familiarize him/herself with these policies.

The post holder will be encouraged to update his/her knowledge and skills through suitable Continuous Medical Education, including attending all the department's academic, teaching and audit meetings. Study leave is encouraged.

The post holder will participate on the Spinal on call rota at middle grade level during normal working hours, including taking initial calls from GP's and other centres.

participate in the general on call for the hospital which may include some non-spinal orthopaedic patients. On occasion this may require the appointee to undertake simple orthopaedic procedures e.g. MUA dislocated hip replacement, wound washout. There is no trauma admitted directly to ROH, and the post holder would be expected to be non-resident on call but available within the Trust in 30 minutes.

Personal specifications

The successful candidate with need to hold a license to practice with the General Medical Council. They will need to demonstrate evidence of adequate level of previous experience (CV and logbook) together with evidence of significant interest in spinal surgery (evidenced by publications and research relevant to the discipline).

The post holder will need to be able to work with a degree of flexibility, potentially on more than one site. They will need to comply with all Trust policies including Health and Safety, and Infection Control. As the post requires involvement with children and vulnerable adults, the appointee will require a CRB check, and will also need to obtain Occupational Health clearance.
