Healthcare Assistant (School Nursing)

Job summary

We have a vacant post for a permanent Healthcare Assistant to work 21 hours per week (Monday to Friday between 0900-1700) in the school nursing service within Ashton, Wigan and Leigh community settings. This post involves attending multiple appointments across the Trust each day whilst transporting all required equipment. You must be be able to travel across Trust independently and you must have previous experience working with children, in either a formal or voluntary setting.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Healthcare Assistant with good communication skills, to work within our skill mix team consisting of SCPHN School Nurses, Community Staff Nurses, Health Care Practitioners and other services .

Main duties of the job

o To support and assist the School Health Team within a range of settings, including the School, Clinic/Health Centre and other Community settings, whilst prioritizing own workload following discussion with Specialist Practitioner: School Nursing/ School Nurse.o To perform duties delegated by Specialist Practitioner: School Nursing/ School Nurse either independently, without direct supervision or as part of a team, within a designated area and across the Trust as required in accordance to Trust, School Health and School Nursing Service Procedures/Guidelines.o To contribute to the developing and maintaining of good relationships with pupils, parents, school staff, other disciplines and agencies.o To assist/contribute in the promotion of positive health of School age children and towards prevention of physical and psychological ill health

Assist the Specialist Practitioner: School Nursing / School Nurse in preparation for, during and after School Health Core Service activities within School, Clinic/ Health Centre, Community environments for example Immunisations and Screening sessions. Assist (where appropriate) the Community Child Health Doctor in preparation for, during and after medical examinations in a School, Clinic/Health Centre environment. Measure childrens heights, weights and plot centiles after the completion of training and assessment of competence. Maintain stock levels of consumables/vaccine and equipment for the School Health Service (where appropriate/necessary) and check equipment (where appropriate/necessary) is in working order. Maintain safe storage of vaccine by rotating stock and monitoring vaccine fridge temperature. Assist Specialist Practitioner: School Nursing / School Nurse in providing a health promoting and health education service for children and families. Adhere to the Trusts Policies and Procedures To maintain the stock of resources used by the School Health Team in the delivery of School Health Service Activity. To contribute to the development of the content of Health Education packages. To directly deliver agreed Health Education packages within School and other settings after the completion of training and assessment of competence. These packages may either be delivered independently or in conjunction with a School Health Service colleague. Undertake School Health Clerical and Administrative duties in accordance with Policy, Procedures and Guidelines. Maintain confidentiality of information and ensure safe custody of records. Communicate effectively in the receiving and providing of written, non-verbal and verbal information. Maintain and adhere to relevant confidentiality, Data Protection Trust Policies applicable to role. Ensure accurate records are kept. Report complaints, accidents and untoward incidents according to Trust Policy. Identify and report any risk management issues. To undertake profiling of all aspects of caseload. Education, Research and Development Assist in the induction programmes of newly appointed School Health Care Assistants. Contribute to facilitation and delivery of practice placements for students. To have knowledge, understanding of Safeguarding Policy, Procedures, Guidelines and the importance of relaying information/referring to the Specialist Practitioner: School Nursing / School Nurse as/when required. To participate in the Common Assessment Framework, ensuring that children with additional needs are provided with a co-ordinated multi-agency response to meeting their needs. Undertake Organisation and Service Specific Mandatory Training Attend relevant training and update sessions in order to maintain and enhance knowledge and skills related to School Health Core Service Delivery. To contribute to the drawing-up of new / revision School Health Working Procedures, policies and guidelines.

Research and Audit Contribute to Trust and Service Specific Audits and Benchmarks. Contribute to the evaluation of School Health Core Programme delivery. Contribute to profiling activity of individual Schools and Caseload.
