Job summary

This role covers a wide range of duties relating to the co-ordination and running of cadaveric workshops within the Bioskills Laboratory. It includes both technical and clerical duties. Providing efficient and accurate support to Wrightington Consultants, other Trust colleagues and Industry Partners.A key aspect of this role is the ability to work in an emotionally challenging environment with the ability to handle prosected human cadaveric specimens. With a responsibility to uphold the legal regulations as set out by the Human Tissue Authority

Main duties of the job

This role covers a wide range of duties associated with the supervision of the Bioskills Lab. There are aspects of this role that will involve the management and physical handling of prosected human cadaveric tissue which some may find emotionally challenging, this includes the removal and cleaning of bodily fluids and tissue. Exposure to unpleasant odours and visually upsetting scenes.

The role requires working collaboratively with surgeons and industry partners to set up cadaveric workshops. Setting up of workstations ensuring equipment is relevant and fit for purpose, cleaning and decontamination of the lab at the end of the session.Interacting with surgeons to prepare for the lab session including discussing appropriate cadaveric models, required instrumentation and assisting with pre-dissection of the tissue.

Liaising with Unit Head, other unit Consultants, unit Fellows & upper limb Unit Education Manager.

Job responsibilities

General housekeeping, liaising with Trust colleagues, exchanging information within guidelines, reacting and responding accordingly where any ad hoc duties arise. It is vital that the post holder is aware of the Trusts Patient Confidentiality policy and adhere to these at all times.

Flexibility towards working pattern is required from the post holder, including early start and late finish times and occasional weekend work.To be available to meet specimen deliveries at the lab, check, tag and store specimens in freezers.To be available to set up workstations, instruments and specimens for courses and teaching sessions.To clean and decontaminate all instruments according to relevant procedures and return to appropriate trays.All lab furniture, equipment and floor to be cleaned and decontaminated after every lab session.Ensure power tool batteries are fully charged and instruments kept in serviceable orderArranging the respectful, safe and legal disposal of cadavers as per HTA and local regulations.

  • I.T- working knowledge of MS office eg: Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint
  • Ability to fulfil physical aspects of the role, including frequent lifting and handling of instruments and materials. Moving, walking reaching using steps, pushing trolleys and distributing boxes.
  • Manual dexterity: ability to safely and carefully handle micro-instruments, assist consultants with pre-dissection, holding nerves/ tendons/ vessels.
  • Attention to detail i.e. when cleaning instruments all tissue is removed.
  • Ability to interpret and accurately process data and information as required.

Qualifications

  • GCSE Maths, English A-Level / NVQ / Level 3 qualification in science related subject ie; Biology, as good understanding of human anatomy is required.
