Job summary
The Corporate Nursing Team are looking to recruit a qualified and experienced Chaplaincy and Spiritual Care Manager within the Patient Experience and Engagement Team.
This is an exciting opportunity for a suitably qualified and experienced hospital chaplain to join a busy fast paced team which provides religious, spiritual care and pastoral support across our inpatient services at the Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh hospital sites for both our staff, our patients, carers and public, irrespective of faith and tradition.
The post requires a healthcare chaplain with the appropriate training, experience and qualifications who will work alongside multi-disciplinary teams (MDTs) and within a multi-faith chaplaincy team. The post holder will be expected to work under pressure, adapting to a busy and demanding workplace. A flexible approach is necessary as the post involves working across 5 days with rostered on call duties which will involve working unsocial hours, i.e. weekends, bank holidays and nights.
The post holder will manage a developing team of hospital chaplains and chaplaincy volunteers who work collaboratively with clinical and corporate teams. The role will require proving cover at our inpatient hospitals at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh and being on site during core office hours, the main base is at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary, Wigan.
Main duties of the job
To provide spiritual, pastoral and religious care to meet the needs of patients, staff, students and visitors of Wrightington, Wigan & Leigh NHS FT
Responsibility for own caseload of patients with wide-ranging spiritual, pastoral and religious needs
Line management of the chaplaincy and Spiritual Care team
To contribute to leadership of Quality, particularly improvement of Patient Experience and governance; research, service review and service audit in line with UK Board of Healthcare Chaplaincy UKBHC

Essential
- Postgraduate qualification (or equivalent) with demonstrable outcomes of learning relevant to healthcare chaplaincy that includes systematic study in any of the following fields: counselling, pastoral care, psychology, psychotherapy, religious studies or theology.
- Endorsement to practice as a healthcare chaplain by a recognized/established sponsoring faith community or belief group.
- Evidence of annual continued professional development relevant to healthcare chaplaincy to UKBHC standards.
- Meet the licencing requirements of the diocesan Bishop or relevant faith leader
- Experience as a healthcare chaplain within an acute hospital environment. A minimum of 4 years.
Desirable
- Counselling or a teaching qualification
- Ordained within their faith community
- Show a commitment to lifelong learning with demonstrable outcomes of learning relevant to healthcare chaplaincy.
- Experience of management role in healthcare chaplaincy
- It is not compulsory for Chaplains to be registered with UKBHC but the Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care recommends choosing them from an Accredited Register.
