This is a brilliant opportunity for a Senior Nurse to join our Matron Team within the Division of Surgery to support the Nursing agenda. This vacancy is open to all senior, experienced nurse leaders.
The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, the flexibility and adaptability required of this post, eager to learn and develop further in the role and be passionate about delivering quality care to all our patients. You will also be a role model displaying the positive values and behaviours of the organisation.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will provide Clinical Leadership/ professional advice and line management to the nurses / midwives, support staff and the allied health professionals within his/her Division to ensure the delivery of the highest quality of patient care and service delivery.
The Matron will supervise the assessment, planning, implementation provision and evaluation of patient care; ensuring that nursing/ midwives and corporate standards are implemented, maintained, monitored and improved upon where necessary. This will include accountability for the monitoring, review, improvement and provision of and assurance relating to patient care.
The Matron will contribute to the implementation and delivery of the Nursing, Midwifery, Therapy and Care Staff Strategy

- Ensures self and others practice is in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Councils standards of conduct.
- Acts as an ambassador of the nursing / midwifery profession, ensures self and others practice to the highest professional standards.
- Acts as a role model for nursing / midwifery staff and clinical staff, responsible for leading, line managing and supporting professional and support staff and for ensuring that each practices in accordance with his/her role, job description and professional parameters.
- To offer support and leadership to Ward Managers and non-ward based managers enabling them to ensure that the basics of care are met appropriately.
- Ensures that all direct line report staff have clear and agreed performance objectives that support the delivery of the Directorate and the Trust values (mission statement).
- Responsible for ensuring that the Trusts Organisational Development Strategy is supported and implemented within own Clinical Directorate.
- Participates in skill mix review, workforce redesign and recruitment and retention strategies to develop and modernise the workforce in conjunction with the Head of Nursing / Midwifery and Business Manager.
- Responsible for the effective management of staff sickness and absence of their teams as well as maintaining an overview of ensuring absence percentage targets are not breached, taking action where required.
- Ensure that staffing levels are appropriate to patient need by working with Team Leaders and Senior Nurses and Midwives to assess patient dependency and adjust duty rotas accordingly, and to develop proposals for changes to skill mix and nursing establishments using information gathered from national and professional bodies.
- To daily give assurance that department and wards are assessed for the correct skill mix/ staffing levels to meet the needs of the service.
- Participate in the Duty Matron Rota as required providing senior nurse support for site issues that may present eg Fire Duty Nurse, staffing, complaints, bed pressures, incidents etc.
- Ensure that staff are aware of their responsibility for Safeguarding including compliance with Trust policies and safeguarding supervision where necessary.
- Undertake monthly quality reviews of documentation from IT systems and the bedside documents to provide assurance of service delivered to patients.
