Job summary

To drive the library agendas, championing continuous improvement in the Department of Medical Education-the Library Section to ensure WWL provide:

  • the best library, information and knowledge resource

Main duties of the job

  • To develop and deliver a Knowledge and Library Strategy in line with local and national priorities, raising the profile of the service across the Trust.
  • To lead on the provision of a proactive, user-orientated knowledge and library service that will enable the provision of excellent health and care services for our patients and the local community
  • To manage the knowledge and library service team to develop professionally and reach their potential to the benefit of the individual, service, and the Trust needs
  • To lead on NHS England's Quality Outcomes Frameworks submissions and action plans, contributing to educational quality assurance processes and taking an active part in Trust-level committees, to include literature searches and outcomes reporting.
  • To co-ordinate the development and application of the Trust Library Service's technology and to oversee the development of the Trust Library Service's resources at both library service points
  • To be responsible for the management of the Trust Library Service's personnel

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • To develop, implement and update the strategic direction of the sub-segment of Library, taking into consideration the requirements of relevant internal and external stakeholders that when enacted will directly impact other departments, other services and other employees
  • To produce management reports, business plans and other evidence and publications for the librar
  • Manage sensitive information about performance for the library sub-segment and be responsible for service change within the library department, negotiating with and motivating relevant stakeholders
  • To promote the Trust Library Service both internally to the Trust and externally.
  • To develop services and resources within the sub-segment of Library that are relevant and responsive to the needs of internal and external service users and encompasses new methods of service delivery and technological developments
  • To ensure that the Trust Library collection reflects the complexity of the user base by consulting with appropriate specialists, users and stakeholder groups in the selection of suitable and relevant electronic, printed, audio and visual material
  • Work with the Head of Medical Education, Clinical Skills and Simulation and Library service and Director of Medical Education to ensure that service provision and capacity to train supports excellence in patient care
  • To ensure that the appropriate committee infrastructures are in place for the Trust Library Service.
  • To produce and implement collection development policies that will ensure the continued development, management and preservation of the print and non-print collections within the Trust Library Service to support research governance, clinical governance, and life long learning and patient care.
  • To work collaboratively with relevant national, regional and local organisations to develop to improve access to a wider range of information services and resources for Library Users and Trust staff
  • To utilise expert knowledge to advise other members of the Trust Library Service and other colleagues on a range of library and information seeking issues and to facilitate their own information research skills.
  • To ensure the Trust Library Service meets national audit standards for Health Libraries, as required by Health Education England North West and other appropriate audit standards
  • To flexibly staff the library enquiry points on all Trust sites and act as first point of contact for library enquiries. This will include enquiries relating to requests for information to support the research, audit and CPD of Trust staff and to inform and support patient care.
  • To undertake complex enquiry work and requests for literature searches on behalf of the library users, identifying and utilising the most efficient and effective specialist electronic and print reference resource
  • To ensure the delivery of proactive current awareness services to maintain Library users awareness of current developments within their field
  • To ensure that the medical collections meet the criteria for the accreditation of the Royal Colleges
    • Oversee staff in their management of devolved budgets.To be responsible for the identification of sources of funding for the Trust Library and prepare to submit business plans and bids to request funding for new initiatives and service developments for the Trust Library Service.
      • To have devolved responsibility for the budget sub department of Library, negotiating funding levels and providing briefs on cost pressures and the affordability of new initiatives.To ensure that Trust Library Services meet the criteria for the QAA in Nursing.
    • Develop and present costed business plans for the development of the sub-department of Library, identifying and exploiting appropriate opportunities to generate income and taking into account conflicting demands on resources.
      • To maintain accurate financial records and prepare estimates of expenditure for the Trust Library Service.
    • To calculate, set and review charges made to library users and departments using NHS costing princip
