Job summary
The Endoscopy Unit is a busy day unit and consists of three procedure rooms and a recovery area.
The unit carries out the following procedures: ERCP, GASTROSCOPY, COLONOSCOPY, DILATATIONS, POLYPECTOMY, STENTING, BRONCHOSCOPY etc.
Opening hours are 08.00-18:00 Monday to Friday.
The unit has 2 morning sessions and 2 afternoon sessions within this there is a list for emergency inpatients.
The unit works closely with the wards and Multidisciplinary Teams daily.
The demands of the unit can change quickly and the team has to adapt and be flexible. Experience of working in Endoscopy and willingness to undertake cannulation and venepuncture is required. The post holder will need to be enthusiastic, work as team player but also have the ability to use own initiative.
You will be expected to assist the team in admitting patients into the department and ensuring patients are kept safe. This will include monitoring the patients post-procedure.
You will be keen to develop skills within the procedure rooms, assisting the nursing team and Endoscopist in undertaking procedures.
Main duties of the job
Function as a member of the Multidisciplinary Team by assisting the Registered nurse in the delivery of effective high quality patient care. All work undertaken by the post holder will be under direction and indirect supervision of the registered nurse.
The role involves working in the recovery area and procedure rooms, dealing with patients who are undergoing sedation and being scoped. Discharging patients and assisting in keeping the unit clean, tidy, safe. Working within the Trust Policies and Procedures and maintaining the Trust Values of WWL.
The role will require you to work across all areas in the Trust which includes those that are designated as positive, asymptomatic and negative COVID wards.

Planning and Organisational Duties
- Participate in unit meetings
- Monitor and maintain stock levels for the dept.
- Undertake errand duties which include;
- Transporting specimens
- Collecting instruments / drugs
- Collecting case notes as required
- Prepare Clinical areas prior to endoscopy procedures
- Ensure availability of endoscopic equipment and arrange any returns and loans as required
- Assist in the preparation of patient case notes as required
- Assist in patient airway management during endoscopic procedures
- Assist in the monitoring of patient during procedures eg Pulse, blood pressure, oxygen saturations, respiratory rate, pain score observations.
- Provide care/assistance to patients according to needs and problems identified in individual patient care pathway
- Report condition, progress and problems encountered, to nurse in charge.
- Assist with the serving of snacks to recovering patients when required.
- Escort patients to and from other departments and hospitals when required.
- Actively assist during endoscopic procedures
- Assist in the recovery area by preparing procedure Trollies, cleaning down of the recovery area/ procedure room.

- Complete/maintain documentation and patient records as directed, in accordance with organisational policy.
