Job summary

An opportunity has arisen to join the Endoscopy department team working as a Trainee Nurse Endoscopist.

This is a 2-year training post at band 7 and you will be studying towards modules in Introduction to Lower GI Endoscopy/Introduction to Upper GI Endoscopy with potential to progress to Band 8a on qualifying.

Employees should ideally secure their manager's agreement for a secondment arrangement prior to applying, as this will be a condition of any offer made.

Main duties of the job

To work within a team of specialist nurses led by the gastroenterology nurse consultant. The post holder will be responsible for performing diagnostic upper Gastro-duodenoscopy on selected patients referred to the Gastroenterology Unit. The post holder will share responsibility for delivering the government targets aligned to the upper GI cancer pathway.

To manage a cohort of patients with oesophageal and gastric cancer from diagnosis to end of life event.

Manage and maintain a database of accurate information on all upper GI cancer patients diagnosed and treated within the Directorate and those referred to it.

Prioritise GP referrals as necessary. Check through histology results to ensure a 'safety net' for sinister pathology

  • Manage and maintain a database of accurate information on all upper GI cancer patients diagnosed and treated within the Directorate and those referred to it

Key results from the job holder

  • To undertake and provide cover for a set number of diagnostic upper gastro duodenoscopy session
  • To undertake upper diagnostic GI endoscopy sessions for patients with or without intravenous conscious sedation working within set protocols
  • Report endoscopy findings to the referrer. In the case of patients referred from their GP under the 2 week rule open access facility, fax possible or sinister pathology results to the GP within 24 hours of performing the endoscopy
  • Set the patient on the cancer pathway as appropriate
  • To develop a nurse-led clinic, to support the patient with a diagnosis of upper GI cancer
  • Communicate with the patient the results of the endoscopy in a way that the patient can understand. Where there is a possibility or a definite cancer diagnosed, use clinical communication skills both written and oral to support the patient and carers
  • Provide adequate information including contact details for patients on the cancer pathway so that they feel supported throughout their journey
  • Further develop and evaluate an upper GI cancer pathway for patients diagnosed with oesophageal or gastric cancer, in line with the NHS cancer plan in collaboration with the cancer network, Cancer lead clinician and the multi-disciplinary team
  • Undertake an assessment of patients with obvious positive pathology with regard to their physical, mental, nutritional, psychological and social circumstances. Refer patient to other disciplines as appropriate
  • Preparation of all relevant staging investigations, for the multi-disciplinary team meetings. Undertake counselling of patients and relatives and carers regarding any cancer diagnosis and all aspects of patient care and management
  • Liaise with other disciplines such as McMillan Nurses, Palliative Care Team, and Nutrition Team

Planning and Organisational Duties

  • To support the Specialist Nurse in developing Nurse-led outpatient autonomous clinics for patients with upper GI symptoms referred by their GP
  • Attend meetings, seminars and conferences aligned with speciality of upper GI disease, diagnosis and management.
  • Explore the possible development of furthering own endoscopic ability to encompass flexible sigmoidoscopy as the Government targets around the possible rapid access for rectal bleeding comes on line.
  • Maintain a professional portfolio.
  • Maintain and update knowledge and skills in gastrointestinal disease management.

The post holder will demonstrate effective communication and organisation awareness levels by:
