Main duties and responsibilities
Take responsibility for the delivery of the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training programme (Tier 1 and Tier 2) under the indirect supervision of the Clinical Training Team Manager.
Become an accredited Oliver McGowan Mandatory trainer by successfully attending the Train the Trainer training, keeping up to date with current and emerging thinking in health and social care practice, learning disability and autism, laws of consent (UK),
Plan the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training schedule for the organisation to ensure compliance with national targets, with support from the Workforce and Learning Team. This will include co-ordinating training venues (across various Trust sites), procuring experts with lived experience/co-trainers, and managing planned absences such as annual leave.
Recognises and addresses the needs of individuals and the group prior to, during and after the session, ensuring reasonable adjustments are adopted.
Deliver the training using a range of methods, including traditional training delivery, digital format, group discussions, and film.
Understand and respond to a range of queries and challenges from delegates during training, appropriately challenges poor practice, identifying the correct response from the range of factual and most up to date material available.
Regularly co-teaches large groups including multi-professional and/or multi-agency people from different professions and different workplaces (including external organisations).
Ensures all of the learning outcomes are fully achieved.
Carries out a range of tasks to support monitoring and evaluation; proactively reflecting on own practice to improve performance.
Attends meetings and training to develop relevant skills and knowledge and ensure consistent and high-quality delivery.
Prepare written reports to demonstrate compliance, progress and challenges, disseminating and/or presenting to the wider leadership team.
Systems and Equipment
Effectively use IT applications including all aspects of the Microsoft Office Suite to produce accurate and well-presented documentation and presentation.
Prepare equipment at training venues in order that electronic training tools are effective.
Ensure attendance registers are maintained accurately and the electronic staff record (ESR system)/electronic training record is updated accurately and in a timely manner.
Adapt to and adopt changes to work instructions and practices as and when they are suggested.
Decisions and Judgements
The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training programme is to be undertaken by all eligible staff over a three-year period and therefore training is scheduled in partnership with the Workforce & Development team to ensure rolling compliance. The Facilitating Trainer is responsible for ensuring that the organisation meets national compliance targets by scheduling and delivering training effectively.
The post holder will exercise independence and judgement in the arrangement of own administrative work managing and prioritising their own day-to-day activities in line with their workload, priorities and training plan delivery deadlines.
Deliver against organisational and ICS objectives, achieving quality outcomes, prioritising own workload and working to tight deadlines.
Promote the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training programme across the Trust and support teams to ensure that staff are available to attend training sessions. This will include attending meetings with senior managers and preparing and delivering briefings to the wider organisation and senior staff.
Change training schedules and plans if necessary to respond to unexpected issues. Where this occurs the post holder will be responsible for ensuring delegates and co-trainers are informed of changes and room bookings rescheduled.
Participate in relevant meetings (internally and with ICS), reporting training compliance, delivery issues and providing information advice and support where requested.
Highlight risks ensuring mitigating actions are taken to keep the training programme on track.
Work within policies and procedures relevant to the Nursing Directorate and the wider Trust, ensuring own health safety.
Communication and Relationships
Demonstrate positivity, recognising the strengths and abilities of individuals, including people with a learning disability and autistic people who are co-trainers, and learners.
Establish and maintain positive interpersonal relationships with other Trust employees including the wider members of the Clinical Training Team and subject experts within the Trust.
Communicate effectively, respectfully, with tact, understanding and discretion when dealing with participants and co-trainers responding appropriately to all enquires, complaints or pastoral matters.
Answer routine and non-routine (complex) questions from participants and expert with lived experience co-trainers, noting any themes or concerns and responding appropriately to resolve.
Demonstrate high levels of empathy and integrity when dealing with emotive and/or complex issues or discussions which arise during the training.
Provide training and pastoral support to other co-facilitators/trainers and participants.
Where necessary, inform trainers/co-facilitators and delegates of anything that may affect the programme delivery.
Have excellent training and presentation skills using various approaches and delivery styles to meet learners needs making sure that they create a supportive training environment.
Motivate delegates attending training sessions and act as a positive role model.
Promote the training, make people aware of it and encourage them to attend.
Raise any issues with the delivery of Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training with the Clinical Training Manager or other senior leader within the organisation.
Build relationships and liaise with local organisations and individuals that advocate for experts with lived experience co-trainers.
Be trustworthy and able to keep information confidential.
Research and Development
Review training feedback and evaluation, identifying themes, trends and areas for improvement, and using this information to inform the wider Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training programme.
Seek out new ways to improve the delivery of Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training based on personal experience, lessons learned and training feedback.
Actively supports and contributes to the achievement of key performance indicators for the successful assessment of compliance.
Undertake surveys and/or audits relevant to the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training in order to inform wider discussions and ensure high quality delivery.
Physical and Emotional Demands of the Job
The post holder will need to travel independently to different venues across the Trust in order to deliver theOliver McGowan Mandatory Training.
Although there are no direct clinical activities there is an expectation that the post holder maintains fundamental clinical (where the post holder has a professional registration) and professional skills.
Competent keyboard skills with proficient use of Trust IT applications including all aspects of Microsoft applications.
Transporting the training equipment e.g. projector, laptop, flip charts, and other relevant equipment to the training environment.
Able to set-up laptop and projectors and trouble shoot any problems associated with this audio visual and other training equipment.
Preparing the training environment for sessions, this could involve moving furniture e.g. tables, chairs and other equipment and leaving it as it was found at the end of the session.
Ensure the training environment is clean and tidy ready for the delegates, raising any concerns as appropriate.
It is expected that whilst carrying out training activities there may be interruptions from participants, other staff or service users to ask questions and develop understanding.
Required to spend considerable periods of concentration to ensure that learners are engaged in training activities and paperwork is completed accurately.
Required to work with people with a wide range of learning abilities.
May be required to discuss sensitive issues with delegates that might be triggering for both delegates and trainers.
Responsibility for Financial and Physical Resource
Be responsible for the security, care and maintenance of equipment, ensuring standards of infection control and safety are maintained.
Maintain knowledge of safe equipment usage and local resources.
Maintain and clean equipment in accordance with Trust polices on infection prevention and control, health and safety and local equipment protocols.
Most Challenging/Difficult Parts of the Job
This training programme can be triggering for participants and co-trainers. The Facilitating Trainer may be exposed to distressing and emotional information and situations, requiring additional support or interventions for those involved.
The post holder must have an up to date and in depth understanding and knowledge Learning Disability and Autism, which them must maintain within this role.
The role requires the post holder to be working on their own, other than delivering the training with the experts with lived experience co-trainers.
There will be a requirement for independent travel across Staffordshire, Stoke on Trent and Shropshire as well as the wider geographical footprint of the Trust, whilst also transporting training equipment and resources.
