Job summary
We have an exciting opportunity for a motivated dietitian who would like to develop his/her skills in paediatric dietetics. You will be working alongside and supported by our Band 7 paediatric dietitians to deliver the dietetic service to our paediatric patients in a variety of settings including community clinics, special schools, child development centres and patients own homes. Your caseload will be varied and include allergy, faltering growth, ARFID, autism, nutrition support and enteral feeding. You will regularly be required to travel and must therefore, have the ability to attend sites across a defined geographical area to meet the needs of the service.
You will need excellent communication skills to establish and maintain close working relationships with all relevant healthcare professionals and associated organisations to ensure multidisciplinary care that is of a high standard.
We are recognised for A, B and C placement student training and for A placements for MSC in Dietetics. As a team we are committed to and actively support CPD, clinical supervision, peer supervision and audit.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will support the Band 7 Paediatric Specialist Community Dietitians to provide a comprehensive and quality dietetic service for all infants and children across the paediatric range (0-19 years) within the Tamworth, Lichfield and Burntwood areas of the ICB and East Staffordshire area for Home Enteral Feeding, in accordance with the Service Specification.
The post holder will:
- Be responsible for a caseload of children on home enteral feeding.
- Provide a dietetic service to children and their parents/carers in a variety of settings including community hospitals and clinics, special schools and patient own homes.
- Work with dietetic colleagues and other health care professionals to review and advance dietetic practice through participation in the development of evidence-based literature and resources (e.g. patient information leaflet, teaching aids), the development of guidelines / care pathways / policies / procedures etc.
- Act as a source of expertise on food, nutrition and diet issues for various multi-disciplinary teams, which may include both health and social care professionals.
- Provide education and training to patients, healthcare professionals and students.

To provide an evidence based, community paediatric dietetic service to a caseload in a range of locations including Community Clinics, Special Schools and patients own homes within Tamworth, Lichfield, Burntwood and Burton-on-Trent. Using a high level of skills and knowledge, providing dietary advice to promote optimal health and nutritional status. This will involve:-
- Comprehensive assessment and provision of individual dietary advice/treatment and on-going support to patients and/or carers according to medical history, diagnosis, anthropometry, biochemistry, relevant medication, social circumstances, religious and cultural beliefs, personal preferences, motivation and nutritional intake etc.
- Gaining valid consent for treatment, ensuring this is within the legal framework for obtaining consent.
- Using analytical skills to develop care plans, including prescribed nutritional products to be used as either sole source of nutrition or supplementary nutrition (this requires concentration and precision with calculations of nutritional requirements and it must be done accurately taking into account biochemistry and fluid status).
- Using skills of negotiation, motivation and counselling with a wide variety of patients and their carers to support compliance with dietetic intervention and advice. This may involve translating highly complex information into a format that is appropriate and understandable for patients/carers.
- Recommending and advising on the prescription of suitable ACBS products including specialised infant formulae, nutritional supplements, enteral feeding products and gluten free foods.
- Providing a domiciliary service to home enterally fed paediatric patients as required, monitoring patients' nutritional status and amending feeding regimens as appropriate.
- Planning and co-ordinating the initiation of enteral feeding in the community by liaising with relevant healthcare professionals and other agencies e.g. GPs, Paediatricians (acute and community) Community Childrens Nurses, Social Services etc. and the relevant enteral feeding company to ensure the delivery of appropriate feed and equipment.
- Referring patients to other healthcare professionals or specialists depending on the outcome of nutritional assessment and diagnosis.
- Providing detailed written reports to GPs, Consultants or other healthcare professionals regarding patient progress and dietetic concerns.
- To prepare safeguarding reports within guidelines and attend and contribute expert opinion as required in safeguarding conferences.
- Recording interventions in accordance with departmental and Trust standards on record keeping.
- Having the ability to work without constant supervision, but knowing when to seek advice and support from colleagues (dietetic, medical, nursing or other healthcare professionals).
- Being aware of and complying with local and national policies on Safe Guarding Children including initiating action to identify and minimise risk working in partnership with carers/families as appropriate.
- Being professionally and legally accountable and responsible for all aspects of own work (including management and organisation of own work area and/or patient caseload).

A significant number of this patient group may have complex emotional, physical and psychological problems as well as communication and language barriers to overcome.
