Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced Dietitian to support the delivery & development of dietetics within the team. The role will be an integral valued member of the multidisciplinary team, providing specialist dietetic advice and support to children, young people, their families & professionals, in both assessments and treatment pathways. This is an exciting time to grow the dietetic workforce with the CAMHS Eating Disorder as we take a lead in service development encompassing dietetic care in young people with eating disorders. A key part of the role will be to offer intensive support to children, young people & their families within the community environment i.e clinics, home visits, support at school. The role will also encompass education and training to various members of the community such as family members in parent psychoeducation groups, nursing staff and clinical colleagues.

You will need to have a highly flexible approach and be willing to travel across the locality. The team is based in Stafford with satellite services across a range of other localities.

This is a fantastic time to join the Trust where considerable growth and development is taking place not only in the CAMHS Eating Disorder Team, but a number of new developments across the range of our CAMHS provision; CAMHS Crisis, Intensive Support team, as well as further development of our Mental Health Support Teams in schools.

Main duties of the job

RESPONSIBLE FOR:

  1. To provide the nutrition and dietetic service to children & young people with an eating disorder in South Staffordshire. Including the management, assessment and monitoring and nutritional treatment plans for their families / carers.
  2. To undertake assessment of Eating Disorders
  3. To provide specialist dietetic input to the multi-disciplinary team by interpreting and communicating the science of nutrition into practical dietary advice to promote nutritional wellbeing, treat disease and prevent nutritional related problems
  4. To offer dietetic advise on the dietary management of eating disorders to other health professionals, GPs, local CAMHS teams and external agencies as appropriate
  5. To engage in a therapeutic contact with children and young people and their families

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • To work as part of the Multi-disciplinary team offering assessment and treatment to young people with eating disorders.
  • To work interdependently with the multi-disciplinary team advising on the dietetic management of young people within the community setting.
  • To undertake the comprehensive assessment of children and young people (taking into account any cultural, family and social needs), some of who may present with complex medical/ mental health needs.
  • To formulate individualised nutritional care plans using investigative and analytical skills, and to evaluate/ monitor progress with all patients, alter the treatment plan as necessary and communicate any changes to the multidisciplinary team, other members of care team, young person & their family.
  • To review, evaluate and modify as required the dietetic intervention, taking account of changes in needs, knowledge, pathological processes, growth, medication and biochemistry etc. This may include offering more intensive support to children, young people and their families as required i.e. home visits, meal support, and support at school.
  • To take a lead role in the development, implementation and evaluation of ARFID Pathway within the CYP ED service
  • Use a range of dietetic assessments tools, e.g. anthropometric measurements, growth biochemical data, specialised nutritional calculations (e.g. artificially fed service users etc.), computer packages, e.g. nutritional analysis (including data input and interpretation or results), questionnaires, observations, discussion groups etc.
  • To work with children & young people in their families in variety of settings, including clinics, schools, own homes
  • Plan, advice and support delivery of the dietetic intervention, including gaining valid informed consent. This may involve use of clinical reasoning, education, persuasion and counselling skills, motivational interviewing and behaviour modification techniques, calculation of nutritional requirements and recommending prescriptions of ACBS products.
  • Attend and/or organise multi-disciplinary reviews, community reviews etc.
  • Request supplies of diet sheets and other educational literature, nutritional supplements and other equipment.
  • Work autonomously for a designated caseload as agreed with Team Leader. This may involve working as a lone practitioner without the direct/ immediate support of colleagues. In more complex cases, there will be increased use of investigative and analytical skills to identify the most appropriate intervention.
  • Be professionally, legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of own work, including the management and organisation of own work area and/or service user caseload (according to clinical priority, available time and resources).
  • Be aware of own limitations and to seek help and advice from colleagues (dietetic and within the wider multidisciplinary team).
  • To provide dietetic expertise, advice and guidance within the team and to the wider multi-disciplinary, multi-agency teams.
  • Initiate referral to other health professionals as appropriate and to attend multi-disciplinary /multi-agency case conferences or reviews.
  • Report any concerns regarding the safety of vulnerable children, young people or adults immediately to Service Manager and/or relevant organisation (e.g. Social Services) and to be involved, where necessary, in investigations/reviews (following locally agreed guidelines).
  • Facilitate service user empowerment through the knowledge of expert service user groups/support organisations.
  • Actively involve service users/cares and other services users in service delivery/developments.
