Specialty Doctor in Eating Disorders. It represents an exciting opportunity to join a specialist eating disorders service and to gain experience in the assessment and management of patients within both an in-patient and out-patient setting.
The Eating Disorders Service is a specialist service, which comprises an out-patient service for South Staffordshire and Shropshire and a regional in-patient unit with twelve beds. In-patient facilities are located at the Kinver Unit, a self-contained unit on the St George's hospital site in Stafford. Out-patient services are provided in Stafford and also from a dedicated out-patient facility in Shrewsbury.
The service is piloting a "step-down" facility for patients approaching discharge from the in-patient unit.
The specialty doctor will work within a well-established and supportive multi-disciplinary team. There is a strong psychotherapeutic culture within the service, with staff trained in MANTRA, psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioural, cognitive-analytical and systemic approaches.
The post-holder will take part in all aspects of the assessment and treatment of in-patients and out-patients. This will include admission of patients to the unit, out-patient monitoring and management of medical and psychiatric co-morbidity.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will provide general medical services within their areas of competence. This will include routine physical examination and health monitoring. There will be a need to assess physical health problems as they arise and arrange treatment or where appropriate liaison with or referral to secondary health care.
- Develop good working relationships with the other psychiatrists and professionals within the Trust.
- To receive referrals and undertake a full medical assessment of all referred patients.
- The post-holder will carry out individual psychotherapy under supervision, if appropriate.
- Training and supervision in psychotherapy treatments for eating disorders is available for interested post-holders.
- The post-holder will be expected to assess and manage patients suffering from a range of eating disorders; this will include both psychiatric and general medical care. Management will include both pharmacological and psychological treatments.
- The post-holder will be expected to carry out a full medical assessment, perform a mental state examination and perform a physical examination when appropriate.
- The post-holder will support non-medical members of the multidisciplinary team and review patients as required at their request.
