Main duties of the job
We are looking for a static band 5 Occupational Therapists to join our dynamic outpatient Occupational Therapy team based at Bradwell/Haywood Hospital, Stoke-on-Trent.
The post holder will assess and treat Rheumatology / Musculoskeletal and Trauma and Orthopaedic hand therapy patients. Interventions focus on rehabilitation, education, self-management and lifestyle advice for chronic and acute conditions and injuries. The post is split between rheumatology and hand therapy. Both specialities offer close multidisciplinary working. The posts provide opportunities to gain specialist skills hand exercises, massage, assistive equipment, splinting and coping strategies including pain management and joint education.
We are looking for an enthusiastic Occupational Therapist with:
- A keen interest / experience of working in Rheumatology / Musculoskeletal / T&O Hand therapy who can demonstrate a strong understanding and vision of specialist therapy and service needs.

To undertake rheumatology/MSK and T&O Hand programmes of care which will be delivered by self, team members, carers and statutory agencies aimed at improving / maintaining the patients ability to manage their condition. To apply a level of understanding of the effects of disability and provide appropriate training and advice to patients and carers on lifestyle changes and adaptations to the patients physical, social and work environments.
To support professional and clinical leadership within the Rheumatology/T&O Hand services to provide a high quality clinical service.
Under guidance:
- Gather relevant medical, clinical and social information to support the analysis and interpreting of complex information relating to patients diagnosis; treatment and long term rheumatology/MSK and T&O Hand outcomes. The therapy programmes will support clients with a range of psycho-social, physical and emotional issues following rheumatology/MSK diagnosis or hand trauma.
- Work with patients and carers to identify and prioritise their needs and agree treatment programmes as part of an overall treatment plan.
- Communicate results of assessments and treatment programmes confidently and accurately to patients; their carers and the multidisciplinary team.
To work within the British Association of Occupational Therapists (BAOT) guidelines Code of Ethics to have a good working knowledge of national and local standards and monitor own and others quality of practice
To be responsible for maintaining own and supporting others with accurate and comprehensive records in line with BAOT and MPFT Trust standards of practice
To carry out rheumatology/MSK and T&O Hand interventions appropriate to patients diagnosis in an outpatient setting and enhance patient self-efficiency.
To be responsible for maintaining own competency through Continuing Professional Development activities and maintaining a portfolio which reflects personal development and meets the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) standards
To maintain and develop current knowledge of evidence based practice; developing specialist knowledge of particular conditions and patient types through in-service training; self-directed learning; tutorials; peer review and external courses as appropriate
Participate in audit and research projects as required to further clinical practice and service development
To represent the rheumatology/MSK and T&O Hand services at team meetings to ensure the delivery of a co-ordinated service and integrated therapy approach
To work collaboratively with multi-professional hospital and community services
To undertake bank holiday; weekend and lone working as required
