An exciting opportunity has arisen for band 6 midwives to join our Infant Feeding Team at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT). In Leeds we provide maternity care to around 10,000 women a year currently across 2 hospitals sites and within the community. We pride ourselves in being experts in both low risk maternity care with a designated home birth team and also the care of service users with complex and high risk pregnancies.

We are looking for enthusiastic individuals who are self-motivated and passionate about Midwifery and have a particular interest in Infant Feeding. You need to be dedicated and possess excellent interpersonal skills and team work. Band 6 applicants should have or be working towards a mentor qualification.

You will be part of a busy multi-disciplinary team who are dedicated to providing individualised care to the woman and families that access our service.

Main duties of the job

To provide clinical assessment and support women with complex feeding issues, supporting the delivery of the infant feeding training programme and supporting sustainable implementation of the Baby Friendly standards across maternity services

Demonstrate the knowledge, skills and experience needed to provide quality care for women, babies and their families.

To ensure that all knowledge and skills are updated and maintained within the requirements outlined in the NMC.

Develop and maintain a working knowledge of local obstetric/neonatal guidelines and SOPs.

Develop and maintain flexible and innovative approaches to care in keeping with current research based practice.

To develop awareness of clinical audit systems, leading to improvements in care for women, babies and their families.

Support Infant feeding team to maintain UNICEF Baby Friendly Accreditation and work towards achieving the sustainability standards necessary to receive the Gold award.

Support the Infant Feeding team leader in developing the infant feeding service, to uphold Baby Friendly Initiative Standards and enhance care delivery, with a view to increasing breastfeeding initiation, sustained breastfeeding and improved breastfeeding experiences.

Support the delivery of the staff Infant Feeding education programme, monitor outcomes and to strive to continually enhance staff education across the service.

Deliver antenatal infant feeding education programme, monitor outcomes and strive to continually enhance antenatal education across the service, focusing on hard to reach or disadvantaged groups.

Support tongue tie assessment, referral into specialist services and to complete any training to enhance the service/care where there is a suspected tongue tie.

Provide support and practical assistance to staff supporting women with feeding issues, in a way that develops staff knowledge and skills, in line with best available evidence and the Baby Friendly standards.

In the absence of the Infant Feeding Lead, act as a representative for the Infant Feeding service at meetings and events.

Experience

Essential

  • Interest in health promotion, child health and family support.
  • Evidence of assessment of care needs, planning, implementation and evaluation of care plans.
  • Be up to date with LTHT Infant Feeding training programme (or equivalent)
  • Significant experience as a midwife or equivalent within speciality
  • Insight into current issues in midwifery/professional issues

Qualifications

  • Degree or equivalent
  • NMC Registered Midwife
  • Successful completion of the LTHT Midwifery Preceptorship program (or equivalent)

Desirable

  • Evidence of CPD relating to Infant Feeding
  • Teaching/assessing qualification
