Trainee Nurse Colposcopist

Job summary

Our Colposcopy Unit is a centre of excellence for women with pre-invasive cervical disease. As one of the first units nationally to introduce nurse-led colposcopy clinics, we currently have four accredited nurse colposcopists delivering outstanding patient care. We are seeking a dynamic, motivated, and resourceful Registered General Nurse to join our team as a trainee nurse colposcopist. This role offers the unique opportunity to undertake specialist training in accordance with British Society of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (BSCCP)/RCOG guidelines.Applicants must be a Registered General Nurse with at least two years experience in womens health or primary care, and have evidence of post-registration education. A commitment to full-time training to complete the intensive course within the required timeframe is essential. Candidates must possess excellent communication skills, demonstrate flexibility to meet the demands of the clinic, and be able to work independently as well as part of a multidisciplinary team. The role requires working Monday to Friday, with occasional evening and weekend clinics. Due to cross-site working between St James University Hospital and Wharfedale General Hospital, access to own transport is essential. The post offers structured training leading to accredited nurse colposcopist status and progression to Band 7 upon successful completion of the training. We provide a supportive and innovative working environment.

Main duties of the job

The Jobholder is responsible for the management of a defined caseload. The jobholder carries continuing responsibility for the assessment of care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care and the setting of standards of care.

The jobholder will provide specialist nursing care, treatment and advice to a specific patient group and will contribute to the development of the speciality service. The jobholder will ensure cost effective use of resources.

The job holder will support the development of interdisciplinary and whole service working. As a role model they will promote the sharing of good practice and delivery of high quality, effective and efficient care. The job holder will provide training and education to staff groups, patients and families/carers.

The Trainee Nurse Colposcopist will develop as an expert practitioner who is able to work autonomously within Colposcopy.

Will be adept in the assessment, planning and evaluation of low-grade and high-grade cervical abnormalities and provide diagnosis and treatment.

The trainee Nurse Colposcopist is able to actively manage her own patients, update medical histories, assess the patients cervix / vagina independently for any abnormal areas and take colposcopically directed biopsies of the cervix / vaginal walls, cervical smears and vaginal / endocervical swabs, but is aware of own limitations and seeks advice as appropriate.

The Nurse Colposcopist will independently review the patients histology. cytology results, advising appropriate follow-up in relation to the result.

Act as a member of the multidisciplinary team.

Able to provide education and training for junior medical staff, nursing and midwifery staff.

In conjunction with the Lead Colposcopist, and hospital based programme coordinator / senior nurse colposcopist will develop protocols pertaining to Colposcopy and ensure their implementation by all staff.

The trainee Nurse Colposcopist will contribute to the management of the department and will also be responsible for maintaining the service in the absence of the person with continuing responsibility ensuring clinical excellence is maintained.

Will ensure that the Colposcopy department protocols are in accordance with the National Health Service Cancer Screening Programme (NHSCSP) / BSCCP and all members of staff adhere to these guidelines.

Ensure evidence-based practise is maintained within all areas of the Colposcopy department.

Member of the BSCCP and the Northeast, Yorkshire and Humber Colposcopy Nurses Quality Assurance Group, attending meetings for updating and networking.
