Job summary

An exciting opportunity has opened up for dynamic, motivated and innovative Emergency Nurse Practitioners / Urgent Care Practitioners / Trainee Practitioners to join our team of highly skilled staff. These positions would be suitable for those who wish to further their careers within a hospital environment where clinical roles are rapidly advancing in order to meet the challenges of the new NHS.

This post has recently opened up opportunities to Allied Health Professionals who also wish to work in the Emergency Department Setting utilising skills and knowledge obtained having undertaken a qualification or willing to undertake a course in the Management of Minor Injuries and are permitted by their qualification under the HCPC to administer and supply PGDs

Main duties of the job

These posts will offer the right candidates the exciting opportunity to extend their practice and deliver high quality care to service users attending the Minor Injuries Units. Candidates will autonomously assess, diagnose, treat and discharge or refer patients according to their clinical condition. As a trainee the candidates will be trained in the management of minor injuries and supported to gain relevant competencies while attending university and gaining their qualification and also work under supervision in the clinical setting.

All positions will require working a flexible shift pattern to meet the needs of the service 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Cross site working (LGI and SJUH) applies to this post.

Clinical

Deliver a high standard of patient focused care in accordance with Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust guidelines and policies

Independently assess, diagnose, prioritise, treat and safely discharge patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed minor injuries/ illness in accordance with agreed protocols.

Initiate pharmacological intervention under Patient Group Direction(PGD)

Accurately request x-rays and make clinical treatment decisions based on their independent interpretation of x-ray.

Act as a referral agent and co-ordinator of care provision. Establishes effective multi-agency collaboration across the primary/secondary interface to meet the needs of the patients.

To promote heath giving health promotion advice when and where appropriate

Act as a role model for the development of clinical skills and knowledge within the dept team

Maintain a safe working environment

Support the Senior Nurse in setting and monitoring standards and seek to continuously improve standards and the quality of patient care, including those standards defined in the National Benchmarks for Essential Care and promote evidence based best practice.

To maintain accurate, detailed written records in accordance with the NMC and LTHT policies and guidelines.

Ensure the safe use and efficient management of equipment and supplies.

Undertake audit/research as required

Education and Training

Contribute to the promotion of a positive learning environment within the clinical area

In conjunction with the Senior Nurse ensure all staff have an individual performance development plan

Ensure both self and team members achieve annual mandatory training requirements

Participate in preceptorship and mentorship programmes

Undertake continuous professional and clinical development, seeking opportunities to enhance skills

Managerial

Working with Lead Nurse provide leadership to the clinical team, developing new rotas/ways of working

Support Lead Nurse in staff rostering, ensuring adequate skill mix

In conjunction with Lead Nurse closely monitor bank and agency usage

Support Lead Nurse in investigating and responding to accidents, complaints, untoward incidents and other significant events

Work with Matron/Lead Nurse to promote the development of nurses undertaking the CNO Ten Key Roles as considered appropriate

All staff are responsible for working with their colleagues to maintain and improve the quality of services provided to our patients and other service users. This includes complying at all times with the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Policies, including Health and Safety policies, in particular by following agreed safe working procedures, and reporting incidents using the Trust Incident Reporting system.

INFECTION CONTROL

The jobholder must comply at all times with the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Infection Control policies, in particular by practicing Universal Infection Control Precautions. Hand hygiene must be performed before and after contact with patients and their environment.

. SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS

1. Physical Effort

Working in a hospital ward or department environment, with highly developed physical skills including the requirement to perform clinical consultations and examinations, suturing, application of limb casts. Undertake clinical procedures which will require movement of patients from trolley/bed to standing and to chair, and back to trolley/bed.

2. Mental Effort

Work in a clinical environment where there is a daily requirement for concentration for clinical consultations and decision making, undertaking patients histories and examinations and with frequent interruptions in order to respond to emergency patient needs. Breaking bad news to patients in relation to their health and wellbeing.

3. Environmental Effort

The UCP will be allocated a base site at the beginning of training but could be asked to move to other sites/areas at short notice dependant on service demand.

Working with patients with a wide range of physical, emotional and spiritual needs. Daily exposure to patients presenting with serious, life threatening conditions and injuries, including dealing with patients with severely challenging behaviour.

4. Working Conditions

Working in an Urgent Care Department, with frequent exposure to highly unpleasant working conditions, daily exposure to blood, body fluids.
