You will work on a wide range of jobs for print and digital distribution, including patient information, communications campaigns, illustration, corporate and clinical documents, and training and education material.

Qualifications:

Minimum HND/degree or equivalent qualification in design or a related media subject.

The post-holder should show a willingness to undertake further study such as the Post Experience Certificate in Graphic Design in Healthcare.

Main duties of the job

Job Purpose:

Participate in all aspects of design and illustration across the Trust, providing a service which is responsive to the needs of the Trust.

Produce patient information resources in line with departmental/Trust processes, for both print and electronic distribution, ensuring all consent, confidentiality, legal and accessibility guidelines are adhered to.

Produce high quality and cost effective clinical/non clinical visual material including design for print and electronic delivery, in line with LTHT and NHS branding and accessibility standards.

Contribute to the clinical and non-clinical video editing service..

Ensure the efficient and effective utilisation of all resources within their area of responsibility.

Provide expert advice, within the scope of their role to service users.

Ensure that agreed department protocols and standards of service are delivered at all times.

Medical Illustration covers Photography, Video, Design, Patient Information, Ophthalmic Imaging and Virtual Clinics and is part of the Leeds Teaching Hospital's NHS Trust.

3 Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required

All post-holders are expected to possess a Media Qualification to at least HND/Degree level in design or related media subject along with a portfolio of work which demonstrates significant original design. The post-holder should show a willingness to undertake further study such as the Post Experience Certificate in Design in Healthcare

All post-holders must have at least two years of relevant commercial or Medical Illustration experience.

All post-holders must be highly computer-literate and have experience in using specialist graphics software.

8 Principal Duties and Areas of Responsibility

-Consult directly with clients requesting graphics material and analyse their needs to identify the most appropriate approach of dealing with the request, this will include ensuring value for money for the Trust, production options and copyright & consent issues. To undertake all aspects of graphic design including the production of conference material such as scientific and non-scientific posters as well as a wide range of routine and non-routine graphics material. Duties will include designing leaflets, posters, booklets, banners, adverts, patient information etc these will include complex graphics projects, electronic teaching/training packages (e.g. DVD authoring), web/multimedia/Trust intranet design/editing, video editing

-To be computer literate and highly proficient in specialist computer graphics, desk-top publishing and multimedia, software. The post-holder should also be familiar with standard office software such as Microsoft PowerPoint, and have the ability to use computers for file management, workflow organisation and record keeping.

Accurate and timely management and administration of digital files, including accurate record keeping, naming and archiving files in line with established protocols.

-Ensure all appropriate documentation is undertaken to support the administrative processes within the service. This involves entering and updating accurate job details into the departments job management system (WABA), including relevant charging details for the work being undertaken (e.g cost codes, trust fund details, invoicing addresses, etc). This can involve dealing directly with business managers/fund holders to acquire the correct charging details.

-Produce appropriate visuals/prototypes and discuss the options with the client and/or Team Leader prior to completing the final product, ensuring a high quality, fit for purpose, value for money end product.

-Constructive criticism from the client and members of the Design Team is encouraged to ensure customer satisfaction. Participation in peer review of work is therefore essential.

-When assisting with video work, the post-holder may work with staff from other departments, and patients in clinical areas such as wards and theatre. The post-holder will undertake editing, sound recording and outputting using specialist software to support the video production service.

-To be able to prioritise their own workload, managing timescales and workflow to ensure deadlines are met and a timely and efficient service is provided. The postholder will be expected to plan on-going assignments and work with others to ensure completion. e.g. liaise with the appropriate staff to arrange any necessary photography or complex illustrations.

-The post-holder will be expected to negotiate the technical specification of services from external agencies according to the needs of a particular job. For example pricing up banners/display stands from external companies and supplying artwork in the correct format to ensure the production of the project

-Requisition services from external agencies such as lamination, mounting and framing services.

-To operate and maintain graphic output devices e.g. plotter and printers.

-To be conversant with modern/changing trends in all aspects of design such as the development and delivery of information to patients e.g. Information Prescriptions and to keep abreast of technological development within the medical illustration field. To assist in the implementation of new techniques as appropriate and undertake personal development to ensure that an appreciation and understanding of technological developments is maintained

-To implement NHS and corporate guidelines in the design and execution of work and demonstrate awareness of copyright and consent issues relating to the use of images

-There may be a requirement for the post-holder to assist in the annual risk and safety audit to ensure the effective management of health and safety within the Design and Illustration service

-To be conversant with local and national policies and guidelines e.g. LTHT Patient Information Policies, Department of Health & National Institute of Clinical Excellence policies, Disability Discrimination Act, LTHT Equality and Diversity Policy and Plain English to ensure products are fit for purpose and meet all relevant requirements
