Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic and motivated nurse to join our Interventional Oncology team as a Senior Clinical Nurse Specialist. This permanent Band 7 role offers the chance to lead a team of experienced CNS's delivering wraparound care to a dedicated cohort of oncology patients undergoing image-guided treatments.

You will work closely with interventional radiologists, oncologists, and radiographers to ensure safe, effective, and compassionate care throughout the patient journey. This is a unique leadership role in a fast-paced, technical environment combining strategic oversight with hands-on clinical responsibilities.

Main duties of the job

In this role, you will:

Lead, motivate, and develop a team of Clinical Nurse Specialists

Provide direct clinical support, including scrub and circulating assistance during procedures

Coordinate procedure lists, support in strategic scheduling, managing patient flow, staffing, and resources

Promote high standards of safety, clinical effectiveness, and patient experience

Drive service development, clinical audits, and quality improvement initiatives

Job responsibilities

The post holder will be practising as an independent specialist clinical practitioner providing patient-centred and evidence-based clinical care, within an agreed scope of competence and practice. The jobholder is responsible for the management of a defined caseload. The jobholder carries continuing responsibility for the assessment of care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care and the setting of standards of care.

The jobholder will provide specialist nursing care, treatment and advice to a specific patient group and will contribute to the development of the speciality service. The jobholder will ensure cost effective use of resources. The job holder will support the development of interdisciplinary and whole service working. As a role model they will promote the sharing of good practice and delivery of high quality, effective and efficient care. The job holder will provide training and education to staff groups, patients and families/carers.

The post holder will work in partnership with the multi-disciplinary team (MDT) to implement and improve the patient pathway and will be expected to develop new skills to further enhance the quality of the service delivered. Where appropriate, the role will include the day to day leadership and management.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Leadership

Provide leadership to the clinical team working with Matron, develop new roles/ways of working

Provide a visible clinical lead and role model to the nursing and wider team by delivering high quality compassionate care.

Support staff to provide efficient, effective, safe and quality care to patients as an expert practitioner.

Responsible for the day to day supervision of junior clinical staff and students within the specialist team.

Supervise clinical delivery of care competencies.

Anticipate problems and take preventative or mitigating actions, or have contingency plans available.

Investigate and respond to accidents, complaints, untoward incidents and other significant events.

Ensures that workload and performance monitoring data for the team is collected, collated and utilised to ensure the effective and efficient working of the team. Reviews this information with Matron on a regular basis.

Work with the Matron in the development of specific elements of nursing practice, reflecting the CSU and Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals business plans.

Engage users and carers views on service delivery and development.

Propose, develop and implement policy, protocols and practice guidelines specific to the clinical specialty.

Exercises a personal duty of care in relation to equipment, resource and stock control utilising equipment and supplies appropriately.
