Job responsibilities

1.JOB PURPOSE/SUMMARY

As an experienced practitioner the jobholder will co-ordinate activities within the peri-operative environment ensuring effective communication is maintained at all times, providing support to qualified and unqualified staff within the department. He/she will play a key role in the assessment of patient care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care.

The jobholder will play an essential role assisting deputy/team leader in leading and teaching the peri-operative teams throughout the 24 hour period.

The jobholder will act as a role model, promoting quality evidence-based practice, developing the peri-operative team and ensuring effective management of the department in the absence of the deputy/team Leaders.

The jobholder will work within an environment for peri-operative patients

3. PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

An understanding of the organisational structure and working practices of the organisation. Understanding of the local and national peri-operative agenda. Awareness of Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust guidelines and policies. Clinical

Fulfils the requirements as directed by the Nursing and Midwifery Council or Health Care Professions Council to maintain and revalidate registration

Maintain a high standard of patient focused care in accordance with Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust guidelines and policies

Act as a role model for the development of clinical skills and knowledge within the peri-operative team

Maintain and promote a clean, secure and safe working environment

Support the Team Leader in setting and monitoring standards and seek to continuously improve standards and the quality of patient care, including those standards defined in the National Benchmarks for Essential Care

Provide assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of peri-operative care for patients, ensuring written records are kept

Acts in accordance with the professional code of conduct

In conjunction with the Team Leader ensure management of clinical services and efficient deployment of staff according to service needs.

Participate in the theatre on call rota, as required.

Act in such a way that safeguards the health and wellbeing of children and vulnerable adults at all times. Is familiar with and adheres to, the LTHT safeguarding policies.

Raise concerns with regards to risk, danger, malpractice or wrong doing by following the LTHT Whistleblowing policy and supporting processes.

Undertake duties on other wards or departments as and when required by service demands or patient need.

Education and Training

Contribute to the promotion of a positive learning environment within the clinical area

In conjunction with the Team Leader ensure all staff have an individual performance development plan and annual appraisal

Ensure both self and team members achieve annual mandatory training requirements

Participate in preceptorship and mentorship programmes

Undertake continuous professional and clinical development, seeking opportunities to enhance skills

Managerial

Working with Team Leader provide leadership to the clinical team, developing new rotas/ways of working

Support Team Leader in staff rostering, ensuring adequate skill mix

In conjunction with Team Leader closely monitor bank and agency usage

Support Team Leader in investigating and responding to accidents, complaints, untoward incidents and other significant events

Work closely with Research and Innovation to promote research , disseminate outcomes and findings to support evidence based practice.

Proactively promotes and uses the Leeds Improvement Method to improve the quality and safety of our services.

Participate in own and others appraisals

Work with Matron/Theatre Co-ordinator/Team Leader to promote the further development of peri-operative roles, as considered appropriate

Deputise for Team Leader in their absence.

Health and Safety/Risk Management

improve the quality of services provided to our patients and other service

users. This includes complying at all times with the Leeds Teaching Hospitals

NHS Trust Policies, including Health and Safety policies, in particular by

following agreed safe working procedures, and reporting incidents using the

Trust Incident Reporting system.

Patient and Public Involvement

8. SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS

i) PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Frequent; standing, sitting, walking, kneeling and crouching to attend to patient needs and roles and responsibilities. Moving & Handling of patients (10-120kg (with lifting aids)) and equipment (weight 1-20kg) on a daily basis. Manual dexterity required to be able to manipulate equipment eg preparation and administration of injections, venepuncture, cannulation, application of dressings, insertion and removal of catheters. Requirement to wear lead gowns when working within the interventional radiology theatres.

ii) MENTAL EFFORT:

Frequent and prolonged mental effort is required for example; to perform independent assessment and diagnosis ensuring accuracy, making decisions regarding patients discharge home, writing detailed clinical notes and planning further management actions and calculating drug doses. Dealing with complex and changing care needs of patients within an acute hospital environment (includes communication with relatives/carers). iii) EMOTIONAL EFFORT: The post deals with undiagnosed complaints; at times this can be challenging, stressful and unpredictable. The attention to detail and the ability to deal with patients and their relatives will require emotional stability and balance at all times.

Unpredictable workload requires the Perioperative Practitioner to be able to rapidly prioritise their workload at all times. Exposure to difficult situations, including distressed patients and relatives/carers. Dealing with, staffing issues and performance issues. iv) WORKING CONDITIONS: Temperature should be controlled, but may experience hot or cold work environment.

• Significant post registration Peri-operative or equivalent experience at Advanced within relevant specialty.

Qualifications

• Registered Nurse
• Recognised teaching/assessing qualification or demonstrable teaching /assessing evidence
• Relevant documented evidence of role competencies detailed within the SPOP development plan (Please see addendum) Alternatively, under Annex 21 working towards (up to a maximum of 2 years)

• Able to fulfil Occupational Health requirements for the post (with reasonable adjustments if necessary), including clearance on blood borne viruses in compliance with Trust Policy.
