Band 6 Nurse - Seacroft Breast Screening unit.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to work in the busy Breast Screening Service at Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust.

Each year the NHSBSP offers routine mammography to women aged between

50 -70 years.

Currently approximately 2,500 women are recalled for further assessment after their mammogram is read. About 40% of these women will undergo a needle biopsy procedure, and 18% of this group will have breast cancer.

The band 6 role would be to identify a womens level of anxiety and give appropriate support prior, during and post assessment. As a member of the MDT the role requires that women who are recalled for further assessment receive evidence-based care and information throughout the screening process and more specifically during recall. This care and information should be delivered in a sensitive and dignified manner at the appropriate time, with due regard to the womens emotional, physical and social needs.

Main duties of the job

The jobholder will provide specialist nursing care and advice to a specific patient group.

Patient Advocacy: Breast care nurses advocate for patients' rights and needs, ensuring they receive timely and appropriate care.

Information and Education: The jobholder will provide comprehensive information about breast health, diagnosis, treatment options, and follow-up care.

Emotional Support: The jobholder will offer emotional support and guidance to patients and their families, helping them navigate the challenges of a breast health condition.

Coordination of Care: The jobholder will coordinate care across different healthcare settings, including liaising with various external hospitals, ensuring continuity of care.

Personalised Care Plans: They develop and implement personalised care plans based on individual patient needs and preferences.

Follow-up Support: The jobholder will provide ongoing support and guidance during and after treatment, helping patients manage potential side effects and maintain their well-being.

Research and Clinical Trials: The jobholder will stay informed about the latest research and clinical trials related to breast health and inform patients about relevant opportunities.

Early Detection and Screening: They play a role in promoting early detection and screening for breast cancer.

Job responsibilities

The Jobholder is responsible for the management of a defined caseload. The jobholder carries continuing responsibility for the assessment of care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care and the setting of standards of care. The jobholder will provide specialist nursing care and advice to a specific patient group and will contribute to the development of the speciality service. The jobholder will ensure cost effective use of resources.

The job holder will work within a Breast Screening MDT team responsible to the Radiology Team Leader, professional working leadership will be provided by the Breast CNS Team Leader.

JOB DIMENSIONS

Will provide advanced nursing expertise to patients attending with a suspected diagnosed breast cancer.
