Job summary

We are looking for enthusiastic individuals who are passionate about delivering high-quality patient care in a collaborative environment and an appetite to learn new skills. Ideally candidates will have existing Interventional Radiology experience and ability to demonstrate competence of using single or bi-plane C arm systems. However, this is by no means essential as full training will be offered. We are committed to continuous professional development (CPD) and actively support training opportunities.

This vacancy is currently for 7 whole time equivalents (WTE) / 37.5 hrs per week.

Main duties of the job

Amongst your many duties will be a responsibility for the further developing close working relationships with allied AHPs and Nursing groups as part of a multidisciplinary Radiology Theatres team. You will be professionally and operationally accountable to the Radiographer Team Managers.

We have a comprehensive induction programme in place with mentoring support available. In- house applications training is provided with online resources also available covering all aspects of Angiography and Interventional Radiology. The successful applicant will be enrolled on the effective Angiographic Preceptorship Package . The training will involve development of knowledge, skills and competencies in the use of the equipment and the skills to develop to a band 6 position. All training will be tailored to the individuals needs depending upon their level of current experience.

We support an extensive range of diverse adult and paediatric IR procedures including but not limited to: treatment of peripheral arterial disease, cerebral aneurysm embolisation, stroke thrombectomy, aortic aneurysm repair, treatment of vascular malformations, trauma, trans arterial chemoembolization (TACE), paediatric vascular intervention and non-vascular intervention.

About us

At Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, we have a comprehensive stroke centre and we are looking to expand our thrombectomy service to be able to provide a 24/7 service for West Yorkshire. Due to the expansion an opportunity has arisen for multiple positions as Interventional Radiographers within Radiology Theatres at Leeds General Infirmary and St James Hospital.

The two departments consist of 6 theatres across 2 sites. Three theatres are equipped with Philips Allura systems (one being replaced June 2025) and three with various Siemens Artis systems. One of which is located within the Vascular Surgical Theatre. A further biplane theatre is scheduled for installation 2026.

The unit is a regional stroke centre & a major trauma centre.

There will be a commitment to on call inclusive of evenings, weekends & bank holidays pro rata.

We are currently a 5 day service Mon-Fri 8am-5pm.

Job responsibilities

Undertake all the professional and technical requirements of the post as a State Registered qualified radiographer with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), while working as an autonomous practitioner within Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Radiology Directorate.

To perform a wide variety of specialised radiography procedures and examinations within Radiology Theatres performing angiographic procedures. Patients presenting for examination have diverse backgrounds and may have complex physical and/or psychological conditions.

To manage personal workloads, authorising and prioritising radiological examinations as appropriate for clinical need.

To work as a clinical specialist as part of a multi-disciplinary team providing high standards of patient care, whilst following policies and procedures as specified by the Radiology Management Team.

The post holder also undertakes the supervision and specialist clinical training of radiographers, undergraduate students and other staff as appropriate.

The post-holder will be responsible for their own workload for a defined area within Radiology theatres, working on their own initiative without direct supervision and managing their own case load. Senior radiographers will work within their own scope of practice as defined by the HCPC.

To contribute to the development and delivery of an effective and responsive radiology service.

Undertake practical training and clinical supervision of radiographers, student radiographers, assistant practitioners and radiographer helpers/assistants as appropriate, according to department protocols and schemes of work.

To assess, justify, plan, implement and evaluate a wide range of specialist radiographic examinations and duties as an autonomous practitioner in this specialist field.

Maintain high level of technical and theoretical skills though personal Continual Professional Development (CPD), in accordance with the requirements of the HCPC.

Participate on on call provision across both main hospital sites.

Radiographers will have achieved the range of clinical, professional and personal competencies according to the LTHT Band 6 Radiographer Competency Framework or the equivalent competency based link grade agreement.

Demonstrate and expand effective leadership skills.

Assess, plan, implement and evaluate the specialised clinical examination in order to produce high quality images.

Have an understanding of the organisational structure and working practices of this specialist area.

To have a working knowledge of the professional standards set out by the College and Society of Radiographers, Health and Care Professions Council and other National Standards e.g. National Service Frameworks.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Clinical Responsibilities:

1. To assess clinical authorisation of radiology referrals in line with the National Regulations, Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations (IR(ME)R), 2000 and local protocols.

2. Act in the role of an Operator and Practitioner*, within own scope of practice, by clinically justifying imaging requests from the clinical information provided referring to the work areas Protocols & Technique Guidelines as a reference if necessary. *as defined in IRMER 2000

3. To work without supervision, taking legal responsibility and accountability for all aspects of your own work.

4. To liaise with referral source where clarification is required regarding selection of the most clinically appropriate imaging examination.

5. To act as a point of advice for imaging referrers.

6. To act as a point of reference for patient enquiries regarding their referral, for all issues relating to hospital attendance for example; radiation protection issues, Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS), Interpretation services and freedom of information services.

7. To act as a patient advocate in radiation protection issues.

8. To ensure patients have given informed consent prior to radiographic examinations and have the knowledge to work within a legal framework with patients who lack capacity to consent to treatment.

9. Applying a high level of manual dexterity in acquiring accurate, high quality diagnostic images, whilst accommodating a full range of patient presentations and adapting standard technique when necessary.

10. To undertake the comprehensive assessment and appropriate examination of patients including those who present with multiple pathologies/conditions. These patients require the use of advanced investigative and analytical skills to select and utilise the most appropriate approach to their imaging.

11. The ability to work in a stressful environment imparting contentious/difficult information on a daily basis.

12. The ability to deal effectively with emotional and/or aggressive patients and/or carers on a daily basis. This will necessitate the use of effective communication skills e.g. to motivate and reassure
