Job summary

Band 6 Specialist Radiographer in mammography 0.6 WTE (22.5hrs pw) permanent position (female only )

We are looking for a qualified Specialist Radiographer in mammography with a genuine interest in gaining experience within the symptomatic breast imaging service. Mammography qualifications are essential for this role but postgraduate training is available.

The Breast Imaging department is based at St.Jamess hospital in Leeds. Our team consists of Radiologists, Consultant Radiographers, Advanced Practitioners, Specialised Radiographers, Assistant Radiographer Practitioners, Radiography Assistants and Admin staff.

We provide a one-stop service, which includes triple-assessment, to symptomatic patients attending any of our eight busy clinics running throughout the week. The department also provides a mammography follow-up service for post-surgery and family history patients. Duties include producing mammograms to a high standard, co-ordinating departmental workload, assisting with ultrasound biopsies and undertaking stereo interventional procedures, taking part in MDT sessions and supporting and training more junior members of staff. Part of this role also involves having a good knowledge and understanding of the Radiology IT systems and an awareness of departmental administration task.

The breast imaging team is committed to putting the patient first and we are looking for an individual with a desire and drive to deliver a high quality of care.

Main duties of the job

Undertake all the professional and technical requirements of the post as a State Registered qualified radiographer with the Health Professions Council (HPC), while working as an autonomous practitioner within Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Radiology CSU.

To perform high quality mammograms, within a clinic environment in line with national standards. Clients/patients attending for mammograms have diverse backgrounds and may have complex physical and/or psychological conditions.

To work as a clinical specialist as part of a multi-disciplinary team providing high standards of patient care, whilst following policies and procedures as specified by the Radiology Management Team.

The post-holder also undertakes the supervision and specialist clinical training of radiographers, undergraduate students and other staff as appropriate.

The post-holder will be responsible for their own workload for a defined area or particular patient type working on their own initiative without direct supervision, managing their own case load. Specialist radiographers will work within their own scope of practice as defined by the HPC.

To contribute to the development and delivery of an effective and responsive radiology service.

Undertake practical training and clinical supervision of radiographers, student radiographers, assistant practitioners and radiographer helpers/assistants as appropriate, according to department protocols and schemes of work.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Clinical Responsibilities

To assess clinical authorisation of radiology referrals in line with the National Regulations, Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations (IR(ME)R), 2000 and local protocols.
