JOB
PURPOSE
Undertake
all the professional and technical requirements of the post as a
state-registered radiographer with the Health Professions Council (HPC),
while working as an autonomous practitioner within Leeds Teaching Hospitals
NHS Trust.
To
support efficient and effective delivery and co-ordination of the dental and
maxillofacial radiography service which includes intraorals, panoramics,
cephs and cone beam CT. Training will be provided in all imaging modalities
if required.
To
deliver the education, training and mentoring of undergraduate and
postgraduate dental students, qualified and student radiographers, hygiene
and therapy students and radiography assistants.
To
act as a source of expertise to clinicians/other hospital staff within and
outside the Radiology Department.
To
identify technical and service quality issues in line with Institute and
Trust initiatives.
To
act as a Practitioner under the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure)
Regulations (IR(ME)R) 2018.
JOB
DIMENSIONS
1 The department performs 20,000 x-ray
examinations per year.
2 Patient referrals are from out
patients, in patients, general dental practitioners, general medical
practitioners and other hospitals.
3 The appropriate education, training
and mentoring is provided for: years 2-5 of dental undergraduates, each year
of which accounts for 90-100 students
20 Postgraduate dental students
25 Dental hygiene and therapy
students
Radiographers
from other departments/hospitals requiring updates in dental radiography.

Operational
duties and responsibilities
1. Deliver a high quality radiographic
service in conjunction with the Team Manager, Radiologists, radiographers and
supporting staff.
2. Ensure documentation of operational
procedures within the department and in satellite areas and maintenance of
all other departmental records.
3. Implement arrangements for monitoring
the quality of service to patients and where appropriate, to develop and
implement proposals for improving services.
4. Ensure appropriate delegation and
supervision of tasks within the department.
5. Manage resources with agreed
constraints and limits.
6. To be willing to take part in out of
hours duties, as appropriate, to meet service demands.
7. To book and send appointments to
patients after liaising with radiologist/clinician/patient
8. Take part in a QA programme for
equipment and techniques.
9. Participate in the selection process
of new/replacement equipment for the department and satellite areas.
10. Collaborate with the radiologists and
other clinical staff in clinical decisions relating to the choice and
execution of x-ray examinations.
11. To review own images (and those
produced by others), to ensure that supplementary imaging procedures are
undertaken where appropriate prior to patient departure from the department.

14. Actively undertake and maintain
personal CPD, professional training, education and participate in own
performance appraisal.
15. Demonstrate active commitment to the
development of junior staff, assist with their practical training and
education and support their development needs.
16. Act as a source of expert knowledge
providing clinical and technical advice within the Institute.
17. To provide daily supervision and
teaching of students.
18. To participate in the on-going
assessment of undergraduate dental students and hygiene therapists.
19. To teach other qualified staff in the
specialty of dental radiography (Radiographers from other hospitals,
postgraduate students from other specialties, GDPs and Clinical Dental
Tutors).
20. To demonstrate and encourage the
highest professional and technical standards in dental and maxillofacial
radiography using personal example, support and constructive supervision.
Professional
1. To take responsibility for all
aspects of the patients welfare during their investigation.
2. To provide a source of clinical and
technical expertise/expert knowledge relating to general and specialized
dental and maxillofacial radiographic practice when consulted by Clinicians,
GDPs, GPs and other staff from within and outside the Radiology Department.
3. To act as a Practitioner under
IR(ME)R 2000, assessing the justification for radiology referrals.
4. To act as a patient advocate in
matters of radiation protection.
5. To co-operate with all policies and
procedures designed to ensure equality of employment. Co-workers, patients

Communication
skills

Have the knowledge and skills to act as a source of highly specialist
information when consulted by hospital clinicians, general dental
practitioner and general practitioners.

departmental equipment, fixtures and fittings.

skills and experience to explain to patients the reasons for performing an
examination, including benefits, risks and limitations of the procedure in
terms that they understand.
