The
Microbiology laboratory is located in the new state of the art Centre for
Laboratory Medicine at St Jamess University Hospital, Leeds.
The
department provides diagnostic services for Bacteriology, Mycology and
Virology across the Leeds Teaching Hospitals sites located at Leeds General
Infirmary, St James University Hospital, Chapel Allerton Hospital, Seacroft
Hospital and Wharfedale Hospital. It also provides microbiology services to
its partner organisations at Mid Yorkshire Hospitals (MYHT) and Calderdale
Huddersfield Hospitals (CHFT)
The
department provides services to GP practices across West Yorkshire including
Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield, Pontefract & Dewsbury. We also provide
dedicated microbiology and virology support to our sexual health contracts
with Leeds Sexual Health and Locala Sexual Health.
The
department is the regional UKHSA Microbiology laboratory for Yorkshire &
Humber, serving a population of approximately 5.5 million people. It forms
part of the national UKHSA network including laboratories services located in
Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Newcastle and Cambridge.

General
duties & responsibilities of the post
Provision
with Consultant colleagues of a service to healthcare providers who contract
with the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT), (the 'host Trust'), with
responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness, and
the proper functioning of the Clinical Virology & Public Health
Laboratory
Out-of-hours
responsibilities, including 1:3 medical authorisation and liaising or results
and participation in the Regional Consultant Virologists' on-call rota at a
frequency of 1:6 including prospective cover. This rota is currently shared
between LTHT and Newcastle Hospitals NHS Trust (NHNT)
Any

About us
The
laboratory processes over 2.1 million samples per annum, providing an
extensive repertoire of familiar and specialist tests for the diagnosis and
monitoring of viral, bacterial and fungal infections.
The
department currently uses several serological and molecular technologies to
assist with delivering the service such as, Siemens Atellica IM, Diasorin
Liaison XL, Hologic Panther Fusion, Elitech BeGenius, ABi 7500 and Serosep
alongside manual and automated microbiology.
The
department is one of five contracted UK Health & Security Agency (UKHSA)
laboratory covering the Yorkshire and Humber region. We respond to local and
national outbreaks e.g measles, influenza and MPox.
Microbiology
is recognised by the IBMS as a training laboratory. The team are dynamic and
versatile, staff are multi-skilled and strive to improve the service that
they deliver. The team goes above and beyond and will always give support to
each other.

PURPOSE/SUMMARY
To provide, with the two current
Consultant Medical Virologists, the delivery of the Virology Services
locally, regionally and nationally. Liaises with:
o Lead Clinician, Service Manager,

To be responsible for providing
specialist clinical expertise and strategic direction to the Virology
Laboratory by expanding and developing practice, implementing Clinical
Governance, setting department policy on service provision and delivering
improved outcomes within the Clinical Virology Service.
To be responsible for providing a
comprehensive scientific service (analytical, interpretive and clinical
advisory) as a Consultant in the Virology Department to medical and other
healthcare professionals to nationally accepted standards, acting as an expert
in the area.
To provide, with the other
Consultant Medical Virologists, an integrated Clinical Virology Service,
offering expert virology clinical advice at consultant level to medical teams
and Infection Prevention Control within LTHT, Leeds community health care professionals,
Consultant Infection Specialists at regional hospitals and public health
specialists at the Health Protection Team.
To provide and be jointly
accountable for the service delivery of a broad range of complex, specialised
and non-routine analyses requiring highly specialist technical expertise in
virology alongside the two current Consultant Medical Virologists and working
with the operational teams & service manager.
To lead and be jointly accountable
for the development and introduction of new molecular and serological assays
in Virology.
To be Lead Clinical Scientist for
the Microbiology Department for the Principal, Registered, HSST and STP
Clinical Scientists. The role will include recruitment, appraisal and job
planning alongside the Lead Clinician for Microbiology and Microbiology Service
Manager and responsibility (delegated as appropriate) for the training of
HSST and STP clinical scientist who are employed either by LTHT or by other
Trusts and are on training rotations at LTHT
To undertake clinical audit of
service effectiveness and to contribute to discussions on clinical audit in
other medical specialities.
