We
are seeking an enthusiastic individual to join the Cellular Pathology
Department as a Medical Support Worker.
Applications are invited from individuals educated to degree level in
a medical discipline with post graduate qualification in specialist subject
or previous experience in a registered medical role.
The
Department provides a Histopathology, Andrology, Immunohistochemistry,
Muscle, Molecular, Non Gynae Cytology and Mortuary service for Leeds Teaching
Hospitals Trust. We are a continually improving department, striving for high
quality staff and processes.
We
process circa 58,000 surgical cases, 2,000 autopsy cases and 6000
non-gynaecological cytology cases per annum and are accredited by UKAS to
ISO15189 standards.
The
post holder will be trained in histological dissection techniques to support
the current pathologist and Biomedical Scientist led
LTHT

Main duties of the job
The post holder will assist
Consultant Histopathologists in specimen dissection and in that role will be
expected to carry out the following duties according to the appropriate
standard operating procedures, ensuring health and safety guidance is followed. The postholder will accurately measure
specimens including pathological features; ensure sampling is in line with
college guidelines and undertaken with precision and accuracy.
Discuss with the pathologists
patients clinical history in relation to macroscopic appearances and
clinical correlation with naked eye examination, including orientation of
complex specimens
For effective communication of
complex information (e.g. advice on specimen handling, appropriate
pre-analytical procedures, clinical details, urgent cases etc) to laboratory,
medical and nursing staff within and out with the Trust.
Liaison with other staff in the
department (senior staff, Pathologists, secretaries etc) on these matters is
also required.

the UK digitally scanning 100% of surgical slides, also introducing the UK's

appropriate clinical pathways.
Responsible for the safe use of

maintenance of infection prevention and control procedures, when and how to
use Personal Protective Equipment and the rules regarding management of
patients with confirmed or suspected COVID19.
Maintain knowledge of and work in
accordance with Trust policies, procedures and protocols.
Prioritise own workload as directed
by senior staff.

understand that there are many reasons that medical practitioners are not
registered to practise medicine in the UK, these can vary from individuals
who have relinquished their licence to practice some time ago to doctors who
qualified in other countries and who have not yet fulfilled all the
requirements for professional licence to practice in the UK. This may include
refugee doctors or international medical graduates.
While
all such doctors have some medical knowledge, it is imperative for patient
safety that they are not mistaken for registered doctors.
They
must not undertake any procedures or clinical work that may only be done by a
registered health care professional.
The
Medical Support Worker role will offer people the opportunity to demonstrate
foundation medical training competency.
