Associate Practitioner - Blood Sciences

The closing date is 23 September 2025

Job summary

Expected Shortlisting Date

22/09/2025

Planned Interview Date

29/09/2025

This is an exciting time to join one of the largest Pathology departments in the country where we have moved into our new Centre for Laboratory Medicine building (on the St. Jamess University Hospital site) and new Acute Hospital Laboratory (on the Leeds General Infirmary site). The Department of Blood Sciences is seeking to recruit additional Associate Practitioners to support our laboratory service.

The candidate will be required to manage the workflow and maintain one of the largest automation systems in the UK, ensuring a smooth efficient service is maintained.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work across both hospital sites utilising cutting edge technology, serving both Leeds Teaching Hospitals and the wider community. This includes the regional Oncology centre and the Leeds Children's Hospital.

Candidates will need to have minimum NVQ level 3 plus an equivalent foundation degree/diploma in Biomedical Sciences together with experience of working within a laboratory environment. Experience in automated laboratory medicine, specifically Haematology/Chemistry would be advantageous, but not essential. Candidates will require good communication skills, must be computer literate and be able to work 24/7 flexibly as part of a wider team of scientists in the automated laboratories.

The successful candidates will have the opportunity to work across all areas of automated laboratory medicine once fully trained. This is a challenging role but one which provides an opportunity for career progression and personal development.

About us

Our Pathology services operate across two large university teaching hospitals in the Leeds Metropolitan area with a population of around 2.3 million and provide services both regionally and nationally.

The successful candidate will be well supported by the wider scientific and clinical teams. The Blood Sciences Department is accredited to ISO15189 and by the IBMS as a training laboratory in both Clinical Biochemistry and Haematology.

Leeds Teaching Hospitals is committed to our process of redeploying 'at risk' members of our existing workforce to new roles. As such, all our job adverts are subject to this policy and we reserve the right to close, delay or remove adverts while this process is completed. If you do experience a delay in the shortlisting stage of the recruitment cycle, please bear with us while this process is completed, and contact the named contact if you have any questions.
