Job summary

The Transplant and Cellular Immunology Laboratory, situated at St Jamess University Hospital in Leeds, is seeking a talented and enthusiastic Consultant Clinical Scientist to join the team. The laboratory supports renal, liver and haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) across the West Yorkshire region and is the national centre for composite tissue allograft (CTA)/hand transplantation. Recipient and donor matching and compatibility investigations in support of regional renal transplant and HSCT programmes are performed, as well as Immunogenetic testing for disease associations and adverse drug reactions. This is a forward thinking and competitive laboratory with a strong focus on, and involvement with, patient management. The Laboratory is accredited by the European Federation for Immunogenetics (EFI) and UKAS.

Successful candidates may have the option of entering into the role on a seconded basis, followed by substantive appointment, subject to all parties agreeing.

Main duties of the job

We are looking to recruit a motivated individual with extensive H&I knowledge and excellent leadership skills to join the senior leadership team of the service.

The successful applicant will be responsible for the provision of a comprehensive analytical and advisory scientific service in conjunction with consultant colleagues. The role is varied and will involve the active contribution to the development of laboratory policies, implementation of new laboratory assays and techniques, training of medical and scientific staff, managing workload demand and horizon scanning. The applicant will have managerial, clinical, scientific and R&D commitments as described in the Job Description and Person Specification. The role will involve providing direct leadership and clinical input into all of the transplant programmes operated by Leeds Teaching Hospitals, this will include involvement in solid organ transplantation, CTA and HSCT.

Applications are welcome from individuals currently in consultant posts or who hold the necessary qualifications to move directly into such a post (FRCPath in H&I). The Transplant Immunology service operates an on-call service to support the deceased donor renal transplant and hand transplant programmes which includes 24/7 provision of consultant advice and expertise; following the appropriate training, the post holder would be expected to participate in this rota.
